2nd Round of Questions for Russian River Cabin Decommissioning, Solicitation 1240BF22Q0096

1. How big is the Landing zone for Helicopters at the cabin? There is currently not a safe space to land at the cabin site. The cabin is in a dense spruce/hemlock forest. There is a clearer area across a creek to the northwest of the cabin (see attached Google map satellite view with approximate cabin location marked). The clearing area starts about 150 feet away from the cabin. At the Kenai Lake Work Center site where the salvaged materials will be transported to, there is an airstrip across the Seward Highway from the Work Center.

2. Has the Landing zone been maintained or will the contractor be responsible for clearing it for use during the project? There is not an established landing zone at or near the cabin site, but there is a clearing about 150 feet from the cabin that is a potential landing area. The contractor will be responsible for any clearing that needs to happen to create a safe landing area. The Forest Service requests that the clearing area is kept to a reasonable size and just what is needed to safely conduct operations.

3. How much does the cabin weigh? The cabin weight is unknown.

4. Would it be ok to remove the cabin in one piece? This is a possibility if it can be done safely.

Safety plan for lifting in one piece would need to be established.

5. If the cabin was to be removed in one piece would it still need to be disassembled and tagged? Yes

6. Where is the designated lay down yard?

Kenai Lake Work Center 33599 Ranger Station Spur (mile marker 23.5) Seward, AK 99664

7. How many pilings are there? How deep are the pilings buried? It is estimated that there are up to 10 treated timbers in the ground, likely 8”x8” with a total length of 6’-8’ each. The timbers could be cut 2-feet below grade and backfilled with material from on site or nearby.

8. What kind of marker is to be used for the buried pit toilet? The signage for the decommissioned pit toilet is not required for this project since another outhouse is not planned for the area and the site is remote.

9. How close is the cabin to the river? The cabin is approximately 400 feet from the Resurrection River.
