About this file
This is a Logging Plan for the DH Brockover timber sale project located on the Columbine Ranger District of the San Juan National Forest in La Plata County, Colorado. The project implements part of the Decision Memo Durango Hills Fuels Reduction issued May 2, 2024, and comprises seven cutting units totaling 374 acres requiring mechanical logging methods. All units utilize the same payment unit (01) and prescription designation (DxP—Designation by Prescription), with unit sizes ranging from 18 acres (Unit 5) to 98 acres (Unit 4). Access to the project area is via National Forest System Roads NFSR 071.B, 071, and 071.A, with temporary road construction of at least 0.55 miles required to access Unit 7; additional temporary roads may be authorized by the Contracting Officer's Representative (COR).
The plan specifies environmental and resource protections including 100-foot Streamside Management Zones on either side of intermittent and ephemeral streams present in Units 1, 2, and 3, identified with pink flagging. Protected improvements include gates, cattle guards, fences, survey monuments, trails, and a transmission line. Slash management requires approximately 75% of harvest-generated slash smaller than 6 inches in diameter to be piled in piles measuring 6 feet by 6 feet by 6 feet minimum to 30 feet by 30 feet by 30 feet maximum, with remaining material scattered to a maximum depth of 2 feet throughout cutting units. Trees damaged beyond recovery—defined as those with tops knocked out, leaning more than 10 degrees, less than half their original limbs, or loss of half or more bark—shall be felled and treated as slash. Both whole tree skidding and in-wood processing are permitted under the contract.

Road Systems Main National Forest System Roads NFSR 071.B, 071, and 071.A spurs adjoin this road (primarily closed ML1 spur roads) and are located behind a gate at the Baldy Mt. trail head. A trail system exists along these roads which sees moderate traffic from mountain bikers, hikers, and runners.
Temporary road construction of at least 0.55 mile will be needed for this sale due to the access of the unit 7, all temp roads will begin off NFSR 071.A. There may be more temp roads created with the authorization of the
COR.
Unit Description:
Unit 1 has an average skid distance of 590 feet although there may be longer skids included. The bottom half will require adverse/uphill skidding due to the topography of the unit. There are three wet meadows that are located on the western side of the unit with 100 ft buffer around flagged in pink flagging and identified on the map. There is an intermittent stream located on the western edge of the unit identified on the map.
Unit 2 may require uphill skidding although it could be avoided depending on logging techniques. Skid length averages around 470 feet, with a cliff ending the unit to the west.
Unit 3 is a elongated south to north unit with a skip section towards the north. Skids should take advantage of the relatively light topography in the unit.
Unit 4 is a larger unit that could use a temp road if desired. Adverse skids could take place although the topography could be used to benefit outcomes.
DH Brockover – Log Plan
Unit 5 is the smallest unit with a dozer line gap between units 5 and 6. There is significant regen in the dozer line that should be avoided as best as possible with COR guidance.
Unit 6 has a gap between units 5 and 6 that is a former dozer line with significant regen. The dozer line that should be avoided as best as possible with COR guidance.
Unit 7 will require a temp road in order to gain access. There will be adverse skidding and hauling due to the private boundary at the south of the unit and the road system that is in place.
Prescriptions and Designations
Boundaries are designated virtually. Refer to georeferenced map for unit boundaries All cutting unit boundaries are designated using georeferenced boundaries except for the NFS/private boundary and NEPA boundary which will be designated by ORANGE tracer paint. Prescription is Designation by Prescription (DxP). Discernable boundaries exist along some NFSR 071.A.
Protected Improvements and Resources
Improvements to be protected include gates, cattle guards, fences, survey monuments, trails, and a transmission line, as identified on the contract area map.
Stream Course Protections
Streamside Management Zones are identified with pink flagging on the tree at the stream buffer edge. Buffers are 100 ft on either side of the stream centerline.
• Intermittent and Ephemeral streams are the only type of classified streams located inside cutting units within this contract. Sections of these stream features are present in Cutting Units 1, 2, and 3.
Slash
Whole tree skidding or in-wood processing are both allowed under this contract. Changes in Slash treatments provision will be included in this contract to allow for unforeseen changes needed in the basic requirements below.
PILE: Approximately 75% of harvest generated slash <6 inches in diameter (small end) shall be piled within cutting units, at landings, or in other disposal locations authorized by the Forest Service. Piles shall not be less than 6 feet x 6 feet x 6 feet and not larger than 30 feet x 30 feet x 30 feet. Piles shall be located outside the drip line of residual trees, and reasonably free of soil and duff to facilitate burning. Piles shall not be located on improvements or within protected areas. Excavated stumps and root balls shall not be placed in slash piles.
LOP/SCATTER: Long butts and slash not piled shall be scattered evenly throughout cutting units, as practical, to a depth of no more than 2 feet. This material may be deposited on skid trails, landings, temporary roads and other disturbed areas as directed by the Forest Service. Bark depths at landings shall not exceed 4 inches.
FELL DAMAGED SMALL TREES: Trees not meeting utilization standards, damaged beyond recovery, shall be felled, and treated as slash. Damaged beyond recovery is defined as 1) has the top knocked out, or 2) leans more than 10 degrees, or 3) has less than one-half of its original limbs, or 4) has lost half or more of its bark (as measured in circumference).
