About this file

This is a Statement of Work for cementing greenhouse floors at the USDA ARS research site in Prosser, Washington. The objective is to mitigate contamination caused by Spongospora subterranea, a persistent pathogen that survives in soil for decades and vectors Potato mop-top disease, by removing contaminated rock bed and soil below greenhouse benches and replacing it with cement flooring with proper drainage systems.

The contractor must perform work across five greenhouse sections: Building 101 (Sections A and B), Building 102 (Sections H, I, and J), and Building 112. Specific tasks include removal and reinstallation of existing tables, excavation to required depth, placement and compaction of gravel base, installation of rebar dowels, formwork, concrete placement and finishing with light broom finish, installation of floor drains (except in Building 112), and site restoration. Building 101A and B require removal of gravel and placement of vinyl trench drains (27 linear feet each, sloped at 2% grade) with 4-inch concrete. Building 102H requires gravel removal and vinyl gutter installation (58 linear feet on each side) with concrete placement. Building 102I requires gravel removal in four 3-foot by 12-foot strips with 4-inch concrete and four trench drains (12 feet long each). Building 102J requires demolition of an existing sidewalk (3 feet 3 inches by 57 feet), gravel removal, gutter installation (114 linear feet), and 4-inch concrete. Building 112 requires gravel removal (4 feet by 18.8 feet on both sides) sloped toward the existing sidewalk with 4-inch concrete placement. All inquiries should be directed to Chris Raver at chris.raver@usda.gov.

Statement of Work

Greenhouse Flooring: Cement

Title: Cementing of all Potato Greenhouse floors

Objective: To mitigate contamination issues with a persistent pathogen of potato, the rock bed/dirt below the benches in all potato greenhouse spaces needs to be replaced with cement, and proper drainage needs added to allow this change. Greenhouses impacted include: 101A and B, 102 H, I, and J, and 112.

Background: The Potato programs at the USDA ARS research site in Prosser, WA, conduct greenhouse work year-round to make advances in potato germplasm development, screen germplasm for resistance to specific pathogens of economic concern, and improve the overall understanding of pathogen epidemiology. Recently identified contamination by Spongospora subterranea in nearly all potato greenhouse spaces has caused significant concern.

Spongospora subterranea is a protist capable of persisting in field soil for decades in the form of spore balls and is the vector of Potato mop-top disease that causes internal tuber necrosis. This greenhouse contamination is highly problematic to the potato germplasm CRIS. Less obstructive solutions are not likely to succeed in completely removing the pathogen and would require use of dangerous chemicals in an enclosed space. To enable the continuation of research by the potato groups at the Prosser, WA, research site, the removal of contaminated rock bed and soil is requested, prior to the application of cement below all the benches. This will remove the source of contamination from the greenhouse. Drainage will be added during the cement process to allow adequate water removal.
