About this file
This document is a Questions and Answers (Q&A) file addressing contractor inquiries regarding grading and site preparation requirements for shelter pad installations at a federal facility.
The Q&A clarifies three primary technical specifications: (1) the steepest acceptable grading slope around shelter pads is 3:1, (2) surrounding ground must be site graded to tie the concrete slab to existing ground elevations using slopes no greater than 3:1 after pad installation, and (3) no additional design contour grade drawings beyond those already provided on the civil drawings will be furnished, as site grading dirtwork to meet concrete slabs is considered a standard task for experienced contractors. The referenced drawing pages include A101, A102, SB101, SB102, SB501, P101-P103, and VF101-106. The document also includes a site mapping illustration showing the location of contract items at the USDA Clayton Farm, with designated "Base" and "Option" work areas identified in yellow and red respectively on both schematic and Google Earth aerial imagery.

Questions and Answers
Q1: “Can required grading slopes around shelter pads be provided (minimum slope away from structure)? Page
A101, A102, SB101, SB102, SB501,P101-P103, VF101-106”
A1: The steepest acceptable slope is 3:1
Q2: “Can extent of grading limits beyond slab edges and pad footprint be provided? Page A101, A102, SB101, SB102, SB501,P101-P103, VF101-106”
A2: The elevation requirements of the slab and the surrounding elevations of the existing ground are called out in the plans. After pad installation, the surrounding ground shall be site graded to tie the slab to the surrounding ground elevations using slopes no greater than 3:1.
Q3: “Can new design contour grades be given to show how to tie into existing site elevations and contours shown on the civil drawings. Page A101, A102, SB101, SB102, SB501,P101-P103, VF101-106”
A3: No further information is available beyond the elevations, contours, and information listed on the drawings. Site grading the surrounding dirtwork to meet the concrete slab using slopes no steeper than 3:1 should be a fairly simple matter for an experienced contractor therefore no further detailed drawings were deemed necessary.
