About this file

This is a Questions and Answers (Q&A) document from USDA addressing contractor inquiries regarding chilled water pump repair and replacement work.

The fluid being pumped is City of Ames water with corrosion inhibitor added, not a glycol solution. The timeframes specified in the Statement of Work are fixed and cannot be adjusted; however, contractors may explain any inability to meet the timeline in their proposals for Contracting Officer consideration. Existing concrete housekeeping pads and steel-framed concrete-filled inertia pads with functioning spring suspension must be reused and shall not be removed or replaced. Replacement pump #2 does not need to be identical to existing pumps but must be another brand with mechanical seals and the same pumping specifications and performance as existing pumps in a horizontal skid configuration. USDA will include an Add Option #3 in the addendum for three new motors and pumps on skids with equivalent specifications and performance in a horizontal configuration, which do not need to be from the same manufacturer as the existing units. Pump and motor assemblies are required in horizontal configuration only; vertical pump configurations are not an option. Hutcheson Engineering has performed pump repairs for the facility in the past.

1. What solution are they pumping, water, glycol, chemically treated? Response: The chilled water solution is not a glycol solution. The chilled water is City of Ames water with corrosion inhibitor added.

2. Can the timeframe can be adjusted. The pumps might have to be sent out to be rebuilt. Response: No. The timeframes in the Statement of Work are expected to be used for the proposal. The Contractor may explain why they are unable to rebuild the chilled water pumps in the timeframe specified in their proposal and the timeframe they are able to complete the work for Contracting Officer consideration.

3. The base bid mentions replacing pump #2 and installing a new one. Does the inertia pad need to be removed and replaced? "The existing chilled water pumps have 4" concrete housekeeping pads and steel framed-concrete filled inertia pads with functioning spring suspension in working order that shall be reused. The existing steel pump skid bases are tack welded on the end to the inertia pad frame and bolted into the concrete inertia pad. The existing steel pump skids appear to be filled with premixed non-shrinking grout visible through holes in the top of the steel plate. Detail "J" for Horizontal Split-case Pump attached."

4. If we supply new pump and motor for #2 does it have to be identical pump and motor or can it be another brand pump? The new #2 pump may be another brand with mechanical seals and the same pumping specifications and performance as existing pumps in a horizontal skid configuration.

5. If alternative pump and you want all 3 pumps same, can we offer 3 new pumps?

(price may be cheaper than repairs) USDA will include an add option #3 in the addendum for three new motors and pumps on skids with same specifications and performance as existing pump skids in a horizontal configuration for consideration. Does not need to be the same manufacturer.

6. Option for vertical pump that fits piping of the split case (advantage easier repair in future and only 1 mechanical seal vs 2) is this an option or do you only want to entertain direct spit case pumps? The pump and motor assemblies shall be in a horizontal configuration.

7. Who has performed pump repairs in the past for the facility? Hutcheson Engineering
