PROJECT TITLE: Wellington Barn Cold Room Retrofit
TOPIC: Technical Proposal Question & Answers #1
Question #1 – Desired temperature and humidity are not specified.
Answer: Research stated that the RH is not particularly important. Humidification is required in the contract so RH can be adjusted as needed. 40° (~5°C) is generally considered optimal for biennial crops to accrue chilling hours.
Question #2 – Control requirements are not specified.
Answer: Building automation controls (BAS) were not included in the requirements for the project.
Question #3 – Location of humidifiers is “unconventional”.
Answer: There are only two (2) mounting/location options for humidifiers, duct and room.
Since there is no ductwork, the humidifiers must be the “room” type. The humidifier could be mounted outside the cooler with the emitter going through the cooler wall to deliver the moisture into the space. Recommend bidders provide proposals based on the location shown on the drawings.
Question #4 – 1’ I-Beam shown on the drawings can’t space 46’.
Answer: Note on drawing A-301 indicates “Structural frame must be at a minimum
HSS6x661/4 columns, W12/53 beams, lateral braced as required for stability and allowable deflection = L/240 max and per vendor requirements (final sizes as determined by cold room manufacturer). Therefore, final sizing of all supports will be the responsibility of the cold room vendor.
Question #5 – I believe the “ideal” conditions for storing cabbage/lettuce is ~34°F/95%RH. It is very doubtful that selected equipment can meet this condition.
Answer: Temperature and humidification research requirements were provided by location personnel and have been incorporated into the design.
