The silvicultural objective is to increase the health and vigor of the stand through stocking control of selected crop trees and/or pruning of White Pine. Stocking control gives desired species (primarily the long lived serals PP and WL, but also other species) sufficient growing space to maintain health and vigor. Pruning improves White Pine resiliency to lethal blister rust infection.
Daylight 50 tpa (25-30' spacing) of WL, WRC, and WP. Favor WL where it appears. Radius shall be measured from bole of leave tree to branch tips of surrounding residual trees.
Leave Tree Selection: (Trees will be considered S1 in the thinning inpection form, using 1/50th acre plots). Trees which are most generally the tallest, healthiest, most vigorous trees free from defect or damage due to insect, disease, physical, or mechanical causes are to be retained on the site.
50 tpa, 12' radius

Undesirable damaged, diseased, or otherwise cull trees greater than the maximum cut DBH. Girdling shall be a band(s), deep enough and wide enough to ensure death of the tree.
White Pine selected for pruning shall be free of blister rust on the bole and have no branch infections closer than 6 inches to the bole.
Trees shall be pruned of all branches and bole needles up to 50% of the height of the tree, to a maximum height of 8 feet. All branches shall be cut to within 1/2" of the limb collar. Pruning shall be done with hand pruning shears, loppers, or handsaws. The tallest, most vigorous trees will be selected for pruning when available.
Existing WP Condition:

Slash depths will be kept below 2 feet. Where average slash depths exceed 2 feet, lopping will be required to bring it down to 2 feet.
Slash will be pulled back 10 feet from road cutbanks, fill slopes, and culverts, as well as any recreational trails.
In special treatment Riparian Zones identified by district biologist (category 1 fish bearing streams): No thinning within 75 feet of a floodplain.
In special treatment Riparian Zones identified by district biologist (category 2, 3, and 4 streams and wet draws): No thinning within 50 feet of a floodplain.

12x12 Spacing
The spacing may be varied by 50% to select the best leave trees based on the prescription and characteristics of desirable trees.
No White Pine shall be cut in this unit. WP not selected as desirable crop trees shall be "ghosted" and ignored, and be coded as S4 trees on the inspection form.
