About this file

The document is a 2021 Curbside Recycling/Refuse Newsletter & Calendar for the City of Pittsburgh's Department of Public Works, Bureau of Environmental Services, specifically for the Central-Eastern region. The newsletter provides comprehensive information about the city's recycling and waste management program, including the distribution of new blue recycling bins to Pittsburgh residents over three years, mandatory recycling guidelines, collection schedules, and detailed instructions for proper waste disposal. The document outlines recycling pickup procedures, which occur every other week on the same day as scheduled trash collection, and covers acceptable recyclable materials such as bottles, jugs, cans, newspapers, magazines, and cardboard.

The newsletter includes additional services like recycling drop-off centers, electronic and household hazardous waste collection, and yard debris collection dates (April 24 and November 13, 2021). It provides holiday collection schedules, with pickups delayed by one day when holidays fall on or before collection days. The document emphasizes safety guidelines for residents, such as maintaining a 50-foot distance from collection trucks, using containers under 35 gallons, and properly preparing different types of waste for collection. Special handling instructions are provided for sharp objects, medical waste, and animal/human waste, with a clear directive to "When in Doubt, Leave it Out!" The newsletter also highlights the city's Christmas tree recycling program and provides contact information for further inquiries.

Pittsburgh, meet your new recycling bin.

The City is distributing blue recycling bins to Pittsburgh residents over the next 3 years. It will have a lid to keep your recyclables from becoming litter and visual reminders of what to place inside without needing to bag your recyclables!

Recycling is mandatory in the City of Pittsburgh per Chapter 619: Municipal Waste & Recycling Code.

All residents will receive information prior to distribution along with detailed recycling instructions when the bins are delivered.

TO LEARN MORE
