PERFORMANCE WORK STATEMENT

INDIAN HEALTH SERVICE: Colorectal Cancer Screening Needs Assessment and Endoscopic Survey Tool

Section 1 GENERAL INFORMATION

1.1. BACKGROUND INFORMATION

1.1.1 History. The Indian Health Service (IHS) Division of Epidemiology and Disease Prevention (DEDP) provides epidemiological services in the form of outbreak investigations, development of surveillance systems, infectious and chronic disease control interventions, and special applied research projects to American Indians and Alaska Natives throughout the United States.

The DEDP is also the national coordinating center and collaborates with the 12 Tribal Epidemiology Centers to collect, analyze, interpret, and disseminate health information critical to identifying diseases to target, suggesting strategies for successful interventions and testing the effectiveness of health interventions that have been implemented.

1.1.2 Mission. Epidemiology provides the foundation for all public health activities.

Tribal governments and health facilities as well as IHS direct-service sites already deliver public health services such as immunization and cancer prevention and control programs to American Indian and Alaska Native communities throughout the country. More efficient service delivery and development of effective interventions to improve health requires in-depth knowledge of the causes of illness and mortality among the population and epidemiology provides that knowledge.

1.1.3 Colorectal Cancer Screening Needs Assessment and Endoscopic Survey Tool.

A Government employee is doing tasks related to overall cancer screening surveillance.

However, DEDP needs the skills and manpower to actually do more detailed work gathering colorectal cancer screening information among VT/Us and the ability to provide endoscopy.

This is a collaborative project with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention staff assigned to the IHS DEDP.
