Dru Barner Campground Water System and Road Improvements
STATEMENT OF WORK
The Eldorado National Forest proposes improvements to the Dru Barner Campground water system and access road. This project will replace the submersible pump in the vertical groundwater well at Dru Barner Campground, install a pole-mounted solar panel power system, install a security fence around the solar panels, clean the well, install power and control wiring, and install a water meter, iron filter system, booster pump, hydropneumatic tank, check valve, and a prefabricated building. Road improvements include roadbed reconditioning of the main loop road, placement of aggregate base in select areas, construction of rolling dip and rocked swale.
The existing Dru Barner Campground water system consists of a vertical groundwater well and two plastic underground water storage tanks with a capacity for 2,600 gallons. The water system serves 2 toilets, 2 restroom sinks, and 7 faucets at this 48 campsite campground. The water storage tanks are roughly 52 feet higher in elevation than the wellhead. The Well
Completion Report shows the well to be 240 feet deep with a 6 5/8” casing and a production rate of 18 gallons per minute. The elevated underground water storage tanks require frequent cleaning due to iron bacteria buildup. Dru Barner Campground is open and accessible year-round.
Clean Groundwater Well: Remove bacterial growth, sediment build-up, encrustation, and scaling from the well casing and borehole walls. Clean by flushing, brushing, swabbing the casing, and disinfection with a chlorine solution. Provide a video showing the condition of the casing and borehole walls before and after cleaning. Dispose of the cleaning wastewater in a manner that does not cause environmental damage. De-chlorinate cleaning wastewater before applying to the ground.
Replace Submersible Well Pump: Replace the existing submersible well pump with a new submersible well pump compatible with the new solar power system. Replace all pump appurtenances including electric wires and the drop pipe. Install a Gundfos Solar, 6SQFlex-3 or approved equal. Pump must be able to operate on AC or DC power. Install a water sample tap at the well head. A needle valve with a non-threaded ¼ inch diameter copper tubing would meet the water sampling needs.
Check Valve, Booster Pump and Hydropneumatic Tank: Install a new check valve, booster pump, and hydropneumatic tank in the building. Compensate for pressure loss across the new meter and new filter system. The booster pump must be compatible with the new solar power system. The booster pump will be used to pump the water from the wellhead up to the storage tanks.
Install Solar Power System: Install a pole -mounted solar power system capable of generating enough power to lift the water from the depth of the well pump to the surface and from the well to the storage tanks. Install a battery backup power system for use at night or on cloudy days. The batteries must be able to operate the well pump, booster pump, and filter control for a minimum of 12 hours. Install the solar panels on a bare hilltop roughly 250 feet south west of the well. Locate and orient solar panels for maximum sun exposure. Set up the power system for easy connection to a truck mounted generator during emergency circumstances. The existing control box has a standard 3 prong 120 volt plug in.
Install Power and Control Wiring: Install underground power and control wiring in PVC conduit from solar panels to wellhead. Restore native surface to natural appearance. Replace aggregate base at road crossing. Install all power and control wiring necessary to operate the water system.
Chain Link Fence Enclosure: Enclose the solar panels with an 8 foot high security fence to deter vandalism. The security fence will be a standard chain link fence mounted on steel posts and coated in black plastisol. The dimensions of the enclosed area will be at least 20 feet by 20 feet with a 12 foot gate.
Water Meter: Install a new water meter to measure the volume of groundwater produced by the well. Locate the meter in the prefabricated building. Install a 1” Badger Meter Recordall
Disc Series Model 55 or approved equal. Meter register must read visually in gallons.
Water Filter: Install a new water filter to remove iron from the groundwater produced by the well and a pre-filter tank to neutralize the pH. Locate the tanks in the prefabricated building.
The filter must be a single tank air injection oxidizing filter with backflushing media and electronic controls and be capable of removing 5.6 parts per million of the iron. The filter system must be compatible with well water pH 5.8. Install a Spring Well Water Filtration
Systems Whole House Well Water Filter System and Calcite pH Neutralizer or approved equal.
Prefabricated Building: Install a new prefabricated building such as the CXT Precast 10.5’ x 12’
Schweitzer Standard Building or approved equal. The building will house the check valve, booster pump, hydropneumatic tank, filter tanks, water meter, and batteries. The building must sit on a concrete pad and be weatherproof. Contractor responsible for laying out and constructing concrete pad. The building door must be large enough, double door arrangement, to facilitate maintenance and replacement of the check valve, booster pump, hydropneumatic tank, filter tanks, water meter, and batteries. The building door will be secured with a deadbolt lock. The color of the building must be “java brown” or other color approved by the
Contracting Officer.
