About this file
This is a Sole Source Justification document submitted to an Administrative Officer at the National Institutes of Health (NIH) on May 12, 2026, requesting approval to contract with Dr. Alexxai Kravitz as a sole-source contractor. The contractor will deliver data from a preclinical analysis and study examining the relationship between physical and cognitive effort and caloric intake under the IRP Bench to Bedside Award titled "Investigating the role of effort before a meal on food intake and obesogenic food behaviors," with Dr. Nicole Farmer serving as the Principal Investigator. The award ID is 1522247.
Dr. Kravitz specializes in neural mechanisms controlling decision-making and feeding using electrophysiology, optogenetics, and behavioral analysis in mice models. He has demonstrated sustained extramural funding from the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases (NIDDK) with three active grants: 5R01DK136810-03, 5RO1DK138131-03, and 5RM1MH138313-02. The justification asserts that Dr. Kravitz is the only qualified source for this professional service because the Bench to Bedside Award requires a preclinical component with preferably an extramural-funded investigator as contractor, and his research expertise in neural circuits modulating feeding behavior directly aligns with Dr. Farmer's laboratory objectives in the Dietary Behaviors and Biopsychosocial Health Section. The requester certifies the justification is accurate and complete.

Re: Alexxai Kravitz, PhD – Sole Source Justification
This is a request for the use of Dr. Alexxai Kravitz as contractor to deliver data from a preclinical analysis and study on physical and cognitive effort and caloric intake for the IRP Bench to Bedside award entitled, Investigating the role of effort before a meal on food intake and obesogenic food behaviors, with Dr. Nicole Farmer serving as the PI.
Dr. Kravitz studies neural mechanisms that control decision making and feeding utilizing cutting-edge approaches in electrophysiology, optogenetics, and behavioral analysis to investigate the neural circuits that modulate these processes in mice. Dr. Kravitz has received and sustained extramural NIDDK funding for related investigations (NIDDK RO1: 5R01DK136810-03;
5RO1DK138131-03; 5RM1MH138313-02).
Dr. Farmer’s laboratory the Dietary Behaviors and Biopsychosocial Health Section, is developing investigations into the role of cognitive and physical effort in food choice and consumption. As a part of these investigations, Dr. Farmer was awarded an NIH IRP Bench to Bedside Award for FY2026 (Award ID: 1522247). The award requires a pre-clinical component, and preferably an extramural funded investigator as a contractor on the award.
We believe these points justify the sole-source use of Dr. Alexxai Kravitz. This purchase will benefit the implementation and evaluation of the Bench to Bedside Award. There are no equal alternate sources for this professional service.
I certify that this justification is accurate and complete to the best of my knowledge and belief.
Sincerely,
