Preservation Assessment Trieste II (DSV-1)

Performance Work Statement The U.S. Naval Undersea Museum in Keyport, WA seeks a preservation assessment of its historic submersible Trieste II (DSV-1). Trieste II is 78.6’ long, 12.25’ wide, 26.9’ tall and 190,000 lbs. The vehicle was used by the Navy from 1968 through the early 1980s, and arrived at the museum in August 1988. Due to its long-term outdoor display, there has been degradation and corrosion of its structure. In order to plan for its restoration, museum staff are seeking an in-depth assessment of its condition and a preservation recommendation report.

The vendor may conduct an onsite visit to determine the scope and approach of the project. The collections manager at the U.S. Naval Undersea Museum must approve all materials and processes being used. The vender will not remove from or cut into the structures in any way and will not open any internal compartments that may cause damage to the vehicle (such as, compartments that would not be able to be closed).

The museum will provide an articulating man lift and operator, but the vendor is responsible for any other supplies needed to complete this project, including for arranging a certified marine chemist to certify the internal components as gas-free. The vender is responsible for the cleanup and removal of all materials and waste from the site.

Vender is responsible for utilizing proper methods and equipment on the submersible.

Requirements:

a) Vendor will open access tank and pressure sphere and certify internal components as gas-free and safe for access.

b) Vendor will assess the structural and material condition of the vehicle, external and internal, as access is possible and will not cause further damage to the vehicle.

c) Vendor will have a fall safety plan in place.

d) While hatch is open, vendor will provide safe access to pressure sphere for museum collections manager.

e) Vendor will remove all worksite materials, structures, and debris from the worksite.

f) Finally, the vender will provide the museum with a report of long-term preservation recommendations for the vehicle, including photographs.
