INTRODUCTION
Albuquerque International Sunport: The Albuquerque International Sunport (ABQ or the Sunport) was recently ranked the 7th best airport in the United States by the Washington Post. This recognition highlights how the Sunport is a leading center for worldwide transportation, advancing local, regional, and international commerce and creating an authentic southwestern travel experience. Its mission is to plan and deliver premier aviation services that contribute positively to Albuquerque and the State of New Mexico by ensuring a safe and pleasurable airport experience for passengers and providing quality services to our customers.
The Sunport is the principal air carrier airport serving the Albuquerque Metropolitan Area and the State of New Mexico. Owned by the City of Albuquerque and operated by the City’s Aviation Department, the Sunport comprises 2,457 acres and is located 5 miles southeast of downtown Albuquerque.
The passenger facilities of the Sunport include a terminal complex with more than 550,000 square feet of interior space, including 22 air carrier aircraft gates as well as one regional/commuter gate area. The 22 air carrier gates are situated in a linear east-west concourse alignment, parallel to the terminal complex and connected to it via a terminal concourse connector. The eastern portion of the concourse is referred to as Concourse A, and the western portion is referred to as Concourse B. An International gate is located at the west end of the terminal complex and is used for International arrivals only. The surrounding terminal area includes a two-level terminal loop roadway system, a 3,400-space 4-level parking garage, and two surface lots: 1) a 573-space uncovered basic economy lot, and 2) a 450-space covered premium economy lot.
The Sunport has two principal runways for air carrier use: Runway 8-26, the primary air carrier/military runway, is 13,793 feet long and 150 feet wide; and Runway 3-31, the secondary runway, is 10,000 feet long and 150 feet wide. The primary aviation runway is a cross-wind air carrier Runway 12-30, and is 6,000 feet in length and 150 feet wide.
The City operates a Consolidated Rental Car Facility, which is located on approximately 76 acres of airport property southwest of the terminal complex. The facility is comprised of a customer service building, ready/return parking area, and service center facilities. The Consolidated Rental Car Facility is currently utilized by eight rental car companies, including Ace Rent a Car, Alamo/National, Avis, Budget, Dollar/Thrifty, Enterprise, Hertz, Payless, and Sixt.
Statistical Information: The Sunport is classified as a medium hub airport by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA). In 2024, approximately 5.5 million passengers used the Sunport. The Sunport primarily serves an origination-destination (O&D) air traffic market, with approximately 90% of the passengers using the Sunport to begin or end their trips in the Albuquerque area and other parts of the State.

Double Eagle II (DEII) is the City’s primary general aviation airport, providing private aircraft owners a viable alternative to operating at the Sunport. DEII is home to approximately 150 private and corporate aircraft, and accommodates more than 66,000 annual operations, which include training flights, military flights, air ambulance, and charter air service. DEII has two active runways: Runway 4-22 is 7,398 feet in length by 100 feet wide, with full ILS and MALSR; and Runway 17-35 is 5,999 feet in length by 100 feet wide, and has REIL on each end.
Recent Developments The Sunport has recently implemented a series of improvements aimed at modernizing infrastructure and enhancing the passenger experience. A new concessions program, launched in November 2022, reflects the airport’s commitment to showcasing New Mexico’s unique culture. The reimagined offerings include a mix of national brands and beloved local businesses, creating a sense of place and offering travelers more choices and convenience.
Capital Improvement Program: FY 2027 – FY 2031 Looking ahead, the Sunport has outlined over $400 million in planned investments through its five-year Capital Improvement Program. These investments are focused on maintaining safe and efficient operations while preparing the airport for future growth.
Planned improvements include:
· Rehabilitation of key airfield assets to ensure continued compliance and performance
· Modernization of terminal systems and facilities to improve comfort and energy efficiency
· Upgrades to security systems aligned with TSA standards
· Strategic landside infrastructure projects that reconfigure roadways, improve access, and expand parking capacity
· New facilities at DEII to support projected general aviation growth
Together, these projects will ensure that the Sunport continues to deliver reliable, high-quality service to passengers and business partners for years to come.
