PROJECT TITLE: Well Abandonment by Boys Dormitory

PROJECT NARRATIVE:

The Illinois Department of Natural Resources, hereinafter referred to as IDNR, operates and manages Bishop Hill SHS as a cultural and recreational destination. Founded in 1846 by Eric Janson, Bishop Hill was settled as a Swedish religious utopian community. The original settlers were successful in constructing the building and social infrastructure needed to establish a working community the church, school, town hall, hotel, and various commercial structures. The buildings, artifacts and textiles give evidence to the mid-19th century buildings and lifestyles of the original community members. In addition, the Olof Krans collection of paintings is internationally renowned for its depiction of ever-day colony life and colony portraits. The Bishop Hill Historic District was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1984 and is listed as a National Historic Landmark.

A water well located near the historic Bishop Hill boy’s dormitory has deteriorated in the past few years with multiple components failing and has become unsafe. IDNR is seeking bids to have the well-sealed and abandoned in accordance with Illinois Department of Health requirements, while still maintaining the appearance of the well at the surface to preserve the historic integrity of the site.
