About this file
This is a Statement of Work (SOW) for machining and restoration of the HTFW (High Temperature Freshwater) Pump No. 3 coupling on the USNS Alan Shepard. The work is categorized as Item No. 0502, Category "A," with a completion date of December 22, 2025. The contractor must measure and machine the coupling and key to fit the existing HTFW No. 3 pump and motor shafts, which are Buffalo Pump Company VHSM Series Size 5 model pumps located in the Main Machinery Room. The government furnishes the pump coupling (Qty 1) as GFM, while the contractor provides Rust-Ban #394 or equivalent rust preservation material and all necessary machining equipment and labor.
Specific work tasks include: coordinating with ship's force for lockout/tagout procedures, removing the coupling while preserving the flexible metal component for reuse, measuring shafts and machining them to match, machining a key to fit with 99% contact verification via blue fit witnessed by Port Engineer or ship's force, restoring the coupling with newly-machined parts, treating with Rust-Ban #394, packing the coupling cover with grease, and coordinating operational testing with ship's force. The contractor and all subcontractors must comply with General Technical Requirements (GTRs) 1-7, 22-24, and 28-29, and must observe all high voltage electrical system safety protocols, as the T-AKE class vessel has non-standard electrical color coding and potentially energized conductors.

NOTES
The contractor and all subcontractors, regardless of tier must consult the General Technical Requirements (GTR) to determine applicability to this work item. In performance of this work item, the contractor and all subcontractors regardless of tier must comply with the requirements of all applicable GTRs including but not limited to GTRs 1 through 7, 22, 23, 24, 28, and 29.
1.2 This ship contains high voltage (hv) electrical systems. Obey all posted and verbal instructions regarding safety and exclusion from high voltage areas. At no time approach, work on, or enter a high voltage area without proper authorization.
The T-AKE class electrical color coding does not follow the consistent color scheme. The ship is known to have current carrying conductors colored green, blue, black, and white. Assume all electrical cables are energized until tested and proven otherwise. Test all electrical cables to ensure they are de-energized prior to working on the item.
QUALITY ASSURANCE REQUIREMENTS: None additional
STATEMENT OF WORK REQUIRED
Provide and operate equipment and supply all services and assistance to machine and restore the coupling between the motor and pump on HTFW Pump No. 3
1.3 Coordinate with ship’s force to have associated equipment locked and/or tagged out per ship’s lock out/tag out policy. When the maintenance is complete, coordinate with ship’s force to have associated equipment unlocked and/or tagged in per ship’s lock out/tag out policy.
1.4 Remove coupling. Save the flexible metal to re-use, as that part came from the new coupling being machined.
1.5 Measure shafts and machine to match. Machine key to fit. Call out Port Engineer or ship’s force to witness blue fit of key to shaft. Blue should show 99% contact between key and shaft.
1.6 Restore coupling with newly-machined parts. Treat coupling with Rust-Ban #394 or equivalent and pack coupling cover with grease
1.7 Coordinate with ship’s force to operationally test newly-coupled pump and motor.
GENERAL REQUIREMENTS: None additional 0502 - 7 image1.png
