About this file
This is a Questions and Answers document from the Smithsonian Institution's Request for Information (RFI 816229241) regarding the Smithsonian Learning Lab 2.0 project. The document provides responses to four key inquiries about the scope and requirements of the Learning Lab 2.0 initiative.
The Smithsonian has not yet determined whether Learning Lab 2.0 will be an upgrade of the existing system or a complete rebuild with user and content migration. Regarding feature prioritization, the organization is still evaluating which features and content from Learning Lab 1.0 should be included at launch versus sunset, while developing a formal process for content quality review. The project scope is approximately equivalent to the original Learning Lab 1.0 initiative, but begins from a different starting point—rather than building collections from scratch, the focus is on strategically selecting which existing content to retain and which to discontinue. The overarching goal of reaching every classroom in America remains unchanged. Concerning artificial intelligence integration, the Smithsonian has deployed AI services for internal projects but is still determining whether any existing AI capabilities have applicable use cases for the public-facing Learning Lab 2.0 platform. This document does not address specific products, services required, timelines, or procurement terms.

Smithsonian Learning Lab
Answers to Questions #3
1. Based on the information in the RFI, especially the Personas attachment, Learning
Lab 2.0 is going to be a significant advancement from the previous iteration. Do you envision this as an upgrade of the existing system, or a complete rebuild with user and content migration?
We are still determining the answer to this question.
2. With regards to RFI question 4 (“What features of the new Learning Lab are essential for launch and what could be phased in later?”), are you expecting all of the features in Learning Lab 1.0 to be included at launch, or are you intending to sunset some features and/or content to prioritize new features for launch?
We are still determining the answer to this question as well. I would imagine some, lesser used features, would be sunset. I also imagine some collections/content would be sunset as well. We are developing our process for how we are reviewing the quality of content and what we want to be in 2.0 and what can be sunset.
3. Also related to question 4 and the overall scale of this project and feature prioritization, how would you compare the scope of the original Learning Lab 1.0 project to this next iteration – larger, smaller, or about the same?
I think the scale is about the same, but I think LL 2.0 is starting from a very different place than 1.0. So instead of starting with no collections, we are at the point of making choices about what content stays and what can be sunset. But the goal of reaching every classroom in America remains the same.
4. Regarding the role of AI, does the Smithsonian currently have AI services available to be integrated into LL2.0, or is the expectation that these services will need to be developed or procured as part of the work on LL2.0? SI has used AI for some internal projects.
We are still determining if any of those would have application for a public-facing
Learning Lab.
