3. Surface Preparation

TPO MEMBRANE

Substrate must be pressure-washed. A minimum working pressure of 4,000 psi with a volume of 4 gallons per minute shall be used to remove all dirt, dust, previous paints and coatings which are delaminating as well as waste products (oil, oil based roof cements, solvents, grease, animal fats, etc). Use industrial detergent if necessary to remove all contaminates.

4. Polyurethane Foam Application

Apply 2-part, 3 lb. density built up polyurethane around all penetrations, low lying areas, and critical areas that may need additional strength.

Polyurethane will be built to approximately 1” depth. Polyurethane strengthens flashings, seals and insulates immediate area.

5. Seam Flashing Treatment

a. Apply a layer of URETHANE BRUSH-GRADE 522 into each seam. (Min 30mils DFT)

b. Application shall be a minimum of 3” wide over the seam and feathered on to the existing roof membrane

c. Heat welded seams do not require additional reinforcement.

6. Application Rates

a. BASE COAT

i. Apply base coat of aromatic urethane 520 roof coating at a rate of 1 gallon per 100 square feet.

ii. 520 will be hand applied by brush and roller over entire TPO surface, over all flash-ings and previously applied polyurethane.

b. TOP COAT

i. Apply a top coat of high solids silicone 412 roof coating at a rate of 1 gallon per 100 square feet.

ii. 412 will be hand applied by brush and roller over entire TPO surface, over all flashings and previously applied 520 urethane.

iii. Each coat must be allowed to dry for 24-48 hours depending on humidity and temperature. The roof is to be inspected for defects, flaws or holidays and repaired if necessary.

iv. Each contactor should estimate coating requirements based on actual experience and needs to figure in losses due to applicator experience, surface texture, wind, waste, and other factors that can affect actual gallons required.

v. It is the applicator’s responsibility to verify wet and dry mil thickness during the appli-cation process to ensure proper dry mil thickness of the total roofing system.
