Common questions

For general fixes for too many results, no results, unrelated results, broad Semantic Search matches, or filters that narrowed the search too much, see Troubleshoot search results.

How are Federal Grant Programs different from grant opportunities and awards?

Federal grant programs are recurring Assistance Listing or federal assistance program records. Use this page when the question is about the program lane, assistance purpose, federal agency, applicant categories, or beneficiary categories. Use Federal grant opportunities for posted or forecasted funding notices, and use Federal grant awards for awarded funding, recipients, obligations, award dates, or sub-award activity. See Federal grant data model.

What does Assistance Listing Number mean?

Assistance Listing Number is the program identifier formerly known as the CFDA number. It identifies the federal assistance program, not a single grant opportunity, award, recipient, or application.

Why do applicant and beneficiary categories vary by program?

Applicant Types and beneficiary categories depend on Assistance Listing source data. Some programs describe eligible applicants and beneficiary groups directly, while others rely more on the program name, Assistance Listing Number, Federal Agency, description tabs, related opportunities, and related awards for context.

Where do agencies and recipients fit?

The result card shows the Federal Agency connected to the program. Recipients are usually reviewed through related federal grant award records rather than on the program search card itself. Open a program detail page when you need related opportunities, awards, or deeper program context.
