Description

The NASA administrator created the space communication and navigation (scan) office to provide central management of the agency's scan capabilities, resources, and functions. Residing at NASA headquarters within the space operations mission directorate (somd), the scan program is responsible for providing communications and navigation services to flight missions. Provision of these services requires strategic planning, systems engineering, design, development, operations and analysis of communications networks, related network control and planning systems. The scan program is responsible for projects that operate, maintain and develop NASA's communications assets, which currently consist of the space network (SN), near earth network (NEN), and the deep space network (DSN). The scan program also contains several crosscutting functions to accomplish systems planning, systems engineering, architecture development, requirements management, spectrum management and technology development for NASA's scan assets and capabilities. In addition, the scan program represents NASA in global forums to coordinate space-related efforts and issues with international space agencies, internal telecommunications union (ITU) and is responsible for data standards development and spectrum management for the agency. The scan program is seeking systems engineering and strategic planning support to achieve its objectives. Potential task areas include: 1. Support to the scan systems planning director in his role as NASA representative in the space internet strategy group (sisg) for the interagency operations advisory group (ioag) 2. Support to DPM on commonality and program implementation planning 3. Systems engineering (SE) support 4. Support the scan program optical communications and technology insertion manager 5. Support the scan network services (NS) program 6. Review documentation
