About this award

The Federal Transit Administration (FTA) awarded the Corpus Christi Regional Transportation Authority (CCRTA) a $6.95 million Project Grant under the Buses and Bus Facilities Formula, Competitive, and Low or No Emissions Programs (CFDA 20.526) on August 14, 2025. The award funds the acquisition of eight low-emission compressed natural gas (CNG) buses from Gillig LLC to replace aging diesel vehicles currently operating in the CCRTA fleet. This fleet modernization initiative targets service delivery improvements in historically disadvantaged communities while reducing operational emissions and maintenance costs.

In addition to vehicle procurement, the grant supports workforce development and training programs for CCRTA technicians and bus operators to facilitate the transition to CNG technology and ensure sustained operational capability with the modernized fleet. The project has an expected completion date of March 1, 2028, and is anticipated to enhance operational efficiency, reduce service interruptions, improve regional air quality, and increase customer satisfaction through reliable, modern transportation services. CCRTA's use of federal grant funding aligns with the FTA program's objective of supporting capital investments in low or no emissions transit bus projects and related infrastructure improvements.
