Description

Primary care training and enhancement - residency training in mental and behavioral health - in december of 2021 the US surgeon general issued an advisory on the youth mental health crisis which was further exacerbated by the covid-19 pandemic. In this advisory he called for health care professionals and organizations to: recognize the role of prevention for mental health, be knowledgeable of trauma informed care principles when caring for youth, regularly screen children for adverse childhood experiences (aces) and other mental health challenges, address the health of the caregivers and parents, collaborate with trusted community partners and government systems that serve children, and develop multidisciplinary teams to provide services that are uniquely structured for children and their support systems. The union hospital family medicine residency is ready to meet his call. We are a 21 resident, single sponsored program in a community medical setting. We also host multiple medical students from marion university and indiana university schools of medicine. We propose to develop a comprehensive longitudinal curriculum for our family medicine residents that integrates trauma informed care, treatment of substance use disorders (suds) with an emphasis on medication assisted treatment (mat), and behavioral health treatment for youth, adolescents, and young adults in the wabash valley. The faculty of the family medicine residency, along with support from community organizations (such as substance use treatment, homeless mitigation, minority health coalition) and government institutions (for example, schools and juvenile centers), hope to combine forces to train our learners to provide a haven for the mental health needs of these vulnerable populations. Learning will take place not only in the traditional setting, but also by using high-fidelity simulations, boots on the ground learning in the community setting, enhanced didactic lectures, and staffing with an emphasis on these key areas. A comprehensive program assessment will allow for iden tification of gaps, along with yearly review, and current learner and graduate feedback, will result in a curriculum that remains up to date and allows US to create physicians that are able to serve the needs of the youth of their communities. We are applying for special funding preference because most of our graduates work in medically underserved communities. The county that houses our residency is the worst in the state of indiana for child poverty and food insecurity. We are not giving up on our community but are committed to becoming part of the solution.
