Description
Primary care training and enhancement - residency training in mental and behavioral health - 1. Brief overview of the project: this proposal, entitled expanding the reach of family medicine for the benefit of children and teens, is submitted by the wright center for graduate medical education's (twcgme) highly innovative national family medicine residency network (nfmr). Training will be provided across the primary care continuum by integrating authentic, team-based patient-centered health professions education within nationally distributed community health center (CHC) training sites i.e., EL RIO health in arizona, healthpoint CHC in washington, healthsource of ohio, and unity health care in washington, DC seeking to ultimately improve access to quality health care for highly vulnerable and underserved populations, focusing on youth mental health. This primary care training and enhancement (pcte) project will employ the curricular innovation capacity and technology skills of twcgme and atsu-soma to assure consistent and cost-effective delivery of a challenging and satisfying local training experience in the mental and behavioral health conditions for the pediatric, adolescent, and young adult populations. The proposed objectives, activities, and assessments have been designed to maintain fidelity with national goals of service to the underserved to yield an increased number of providers who are able, in their critical roles, to serve the mental and behavioral health needs of the communities for which they care within the practice limits of family medicine. Specific measurable objectives and accomplishments: goal 1: increase the number of primary care physicians who are trained in the prevention, identification, diagnosis, treatment, and referral of services for mental and behavioral health conditions. Goal 2: develop or expand partnerships with integrated behavioral health and primary care settings and community-based organizations to provide clinical rotations for at least one month in duration for primary care residents. Goal 3: DEV elop or enhance mental and behavioral health content in didactic and clinical training for primary care residents including suicide prevention, trauma informed care including abuse and gun violence; materials must be culturally and linguistically competent. Medical residency: family medicine twcgme is requesting a funding preference and a funding priority.
