PRIMARY CARE TRAINING AND ENHANCEMENT - RESIDENCY TRAINING IN MENTAL AND BEHAVIORAL HEALTH - THE BEHAVIORAL MEDICINE RESIDENCY INNOVATIONS, TRAININGS, AND ENHANCEMENTS (BRITE) PROGRAM IS AN INTERDISCIPLINARY EFFORT AT JOHN PETER SMITH HEALTH NETWORK (JPS) AND COMMUNITY PARTNERS WITHIN TARRANT COUNTY (TC) AIMED AT ADDRESSING AND MEETING THE BEHAVIORAL HEALTH NEEDS OF ALL TC CITIZENS, AS WELL AS BROADER POPULATIONS (E.G., RURAL TEXANS). BRITE WILL FOCUS ON TRANSFORMING CLINICAL TRAINING ENVIRONMENTS FOR FAMILY MEDICINE (FM) RESIDENTS IN INTEGRATED BEHAVIORAL MEDICINE AND PRIMARY CARE DELIVERY SYSTEMS TO ENSURE TRAINEES ARE WELL PREPARED TO PRACTICE IN AND TAKE LEADERSHIP ROLES THAT RECOGNIZE THE IMPORTANCE OF BEHAVIORAL HEALTH IN PRIMARY CARE. THE INVESTMENT AND TRAINING BY BRITE WILL LEAVE A SUSTAINABLE FOOTPRINT THAT CREATES AND DELIVERS QUALITY EDUCATIONAL TRAINING TO MEET THE COMPLEX DEMANDS OF RURAL PRIMARY CARE. THE BRITE PROGRAM WILL BE ACCOMPLISHED VIA A CROSS DEPARTMENTAL EFFORT AT JPS AND WILL INCLUDE FACULTY FROM BOTH THE PSYCHIATRY AND FAMILY MEDICINE DEPARTMENTS. OVER THE 5 YEAR GRANT PERIOD, BRITE FACULTY WILL WORK TO IMPROVE FAMILY MEDICINE DIDACTICS OFFERED TO ALL RESIDENTS, IMPROVE BEHAVIORAL HEALTH ELECTIVES FOR FAMILY MEDICINE (ALONGSIDE COMMUNITY PARTNERS - TARRANT COUNTY WOMEN'S CENTER, RESOURCE RECOVERY COUNCIL, AND MY HEALTH MY RESOURCES TARRANT COUNTY), IMPROVE BEHAVIORAL HEALTH PRECEPTING IN THE FAMILY MEDICINE RESIDENCY PROGRAM, OFFER A SPECIALTY CERTIFICATE FOR BEHAVIORAL MEDICINE TRAINING, AS WELL AS A FULL BEHAVIORAL MEDICINE TRACK TO INCLUDE A MASTER'S DEGREE IN MARRIAGE AND FAMILY THERAPY. THIS DEGREE WILL BE OFFERED WITH BRITE COMMUNITY PARTNER, TEXAS WESLEYAN UNIVERSITY. BRITE STAFF PLANS TO EXPAND CURRENT BEHAVIORAL HEALTH EDUCATION THROUGH THESE PARTNERSHIPS THAT WILL EXPAND AND ENHANCE MENTAL AND BEHAVIORAL HEALTH TRAINING, ESPECIALLY IN THE AREAS OF SUICIDE PREVENTION AND GUN VIOLENCE. BRITE WILL IMPACT THE JPS FM RESIDENCY BY PREPARING GRADUATES FOR ADVANCED BEHAVIORAL MEDICINE PRACTICE IN CLINI CAL CARE, INCLUDING PSYCHOTHERAPEUTIC PRACTICE AND PSYCHIATRIC PRESCRIBING. ADDITIONALLY, THE BRITE PROGRAM WILL POSITIVELY IMPACT THE JPS PSYCHIATRY RESIDENCY AS THEY WILL ALSO HAVE INCREASED OPPORTUNITIES TO TRAIN ALONGSIDE FAMILY MEDICINE RESIDENTS AND GAIN A BETTER UNDERSTANDING OF THE NEEDS OF RURAL PRIMARY HEALTH CARE. THE BRITE PROGRAM WILL GRADUATE 120 RESIDENTS DURING THE 5-YEAR PERIOD OF WHICH 18 CERTIFICATES WILL BE ISSUED AND 7 RESIDENTS FROM THE PGY4 PROGRAM. WITH JPS FM RESIDENCY PROGRAM BEING THE LARGEST FAMILY MEDICINE PROGRAM IN THE COUNTRY AND TRAINING MORE RESIDENTS TO WORK IN RURAL AND UNDERSERVED COMMUNITIES THAN ANY OTHER RESIDENCY IN THE NATION, THE BRITE PROGRAM IS REQUESTING FUNDING PRIORITY AS JPS HAD A SIGNIFICANT INCREASE IN PLACING RESIDENTS IN MEDICALLY UNDERSERVED PRACTICE SETTINGS. JPS HAD A PLACEMENT RATE OF 59% INCREASE OF ITS GRADUATES WORKING IN AN MUC (DEFINED AS HPSA OR MUA) FROM ACADEMIC YEAR 2020-21 TO 2021-22.
