Description
Primary care training and enhancement - residency training in mental and behavioral health - the department of family and community medicine at the kirk kerkorian school of medicine at unlv is applying for a primary care training and enhancement-residency training in mental and behavioral health (pcte-rtmb) grant to support training resident physicians in our rural and urban family medicine residency programs. The training will focus on prevention, identification, diagnosis, treatment, and referral of services for mental and behavioral health conditions for pediatric, adolescent, young adult, and vulnerable populations (e.g., college athletes, individuals at-risk or have experienced abuse, trauma, or mental health and/or substance use disorders, gun violence, and individuals with disabilities and autism spectrum disorders). We request funding preference based on an MUC placement rate over 50% for both programs (attachment 7) and funding priority for our residency programs training residents in rural areas, maintaining continued accreditation, and rotating at rural clinic sites (attachments 9, 1, and 4). The nevada family medicine: behavioral health enhancement project (NV family medicine bhep) addresses access, safety, telehealth, mental health, substance use, suicide prevention, trauma informed care, and partnerships through culturally and linguistically appropriate evidence-based courses and advanced clinical experiences to enable graduates to develop competencies. The at-risk patient populations served include the complete life-cycle with a focus on vulnerable pediatric and young adults of the severely medically underserved and rural areas of humboldt, pershing, lander and clark counties in nevada. Nevada currently ranks 39 in healthcare and the rural areas are underserved even relative to the rest of the state. Training and implementation of national standardized screening tools such as screening, brief intervention, and referral to treatment, will enhance clinical care. Innovation of new mental and behavioral health delivered TH rough graduate medical education-based project echo and podcasts will provide enhanced education without walls, in turn strengthening academic and community partnerships. Participation in inter-professional simulation is designed to improve teaching techniques for sensitive patient interactions with vulnerable populations. Primary data derived knowledge and clinical skill assessments will determine curricular effectiveness. The project will feature collaboration between the department of family and community medicine and other school of medicine departments, unlv athletics and student wellness programs, and community partner hospitals in the medically underserved areas and rural area, humboldt general hospital and community clinics underpinned by the nevada state office of rural health, our communities and organizations involved in social change such as the national music to life. The project will primarily support and impact unlv family medicine residents and faculty, but will also benefit pediatric and internal medicine residencies, other family medicine residents and physicians in the community, and patients in all of the communities served.
