MINNEAPOLIS PUBLIC SCHOOLS WILL TRAIN 300+ ADULTS WORKING WITH YOUTH AGES 12-18 TO IDENTIFY, UNDERSTAND, AND RESPOND TO SIGNS OF MENTAL ILLNESS AND SUBSTANCE USE DISORDERS, INCLUDING A FIVE-STEP ACTION PLAN FOR RESPONSE TO BOTH CRISIS AND NON-CRISIS SITUATIONS. BEGINNING IN SEPTEMBER 2014, YOUTH MENTAL HEALTH FIRST AID (YMHFA) TRAINING WILL BE DELIVERED TO STAFF, TEACHERS AND COMMUNITY MEMBERS ACROSS MINNEAPOLIS AND SURROUNDING SUBURBAN CITIES. THIS TWO-YEAR TRAINING STRATEGY IS EVIDENCE-BASED AND WILL COMPLEMENT THE DISTRICT'S EXISTING EXPANDED SCHOOL-BASED MENTAL HEALTH CONTINUUM OF CARE, CREATING SEAMLESS SUPPORT PATHWAYS FOR STUDENTS AND OTHER YOUTH TO CONNECT TO AGE- AND CULTURALLY-APPROPRIATE MENTAL HEALTH TREATMENT. MPS WILL CERTIFY EIGHT INSTRUCTORS IN YMHFA, AND IN TURN THOSE INSTRUCTORS WILL TRAIN MORE THAN 300 TEACHERS, STAFF AND COMMUNITY MEMBERS INCLUDING LOCAL YOUTH MENTAL HEALTH PRACTITIONERS, COMMUNITY ORGANIZATION REPRESENTATIVES, MEMBERS OF THE FAITH COMMUNITY AND LAW ENFORCEMENT OFFICERS.
