Partnership To End Addiction received a $453,750 Project Grant award from the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA) under the Drug Use and Addiction Research Programs (CFDA 93.279), effective March 15, 2026 through February 29, 2028. The award funds development and evaluation of HALO (Helping Affected Loved Ones), an artificial intelligence-powered chatbot designed to deliver evidence-based, real-time support to concerned significant others (CSOs)—primarily parents and caregivers—of individuals with substance use disorder (SUD). The project will integrate HALO into Partnership To End Addiction's existing helpline, which currently serves over 23,000 families annually through multiple modalities including phone, text, automated messaging, peer support, and e-learning. The R61/R33 phased project will employ natural language processing techniques to analyze over 40,000 historical helpline interactions and conduct user-centered design research with CSOs, individuals with SUD, and peer coaches to develop HALO's functionality. A three-month R61 pilot trial (N=60) will assess feasibility, usability, engagement, and preliminary effects on family recovery capital and CSO functioning across three intervention conditions: helpline only; helpline plus HALO; and helpline plus HALO with peer support. Progression to the R33 phase—contingent upon meeting predefined feasibility benchmarks—will include a six-month, factorial design trial (N=800) to evaluate individual and combined effects of HALO and peer support components on family outcomes and substance use reduction.Federal Grant Award Summary
