Project Grant R43DA065369
- The National Institute on Drug Abuse awarded the University of California, San Diego $879,000 on March 1, 2026, under the Drug Use and Addiction Research Programs (CFDA 93.279) to develop and validate a novel episode-based paradigm for studying how family processes drive adolescent substance use. The project will collect real-time, real-world intensive longitudinal data on discrete parent and youth behaviors before and after episodes of substance use from 90 adolescents who use substances....
- The National Institute on Drug Abuse awarded $398,580 to Doro Mind Inc. on June 15, 2026, under the Drug Use and Addiction Research Programs (CFDA 93.279) to develop a digital platform addressing adverse effects of non-disordered drug use in individuals with serious mental illness. The project delivers two primary software capabilities. The first is a user interface supporting coordinated specialty care (CSC) by leveraging cognitive task analysis to improve continuity of care and collaborative...
- The National Institute on Drug Abuse awarded Pillsmart Inc. $399,993 on June 1, 2026, under the Drug Use and Addiction Research Programs (CFDA 93.279) to develop and validate the technical feasibility of LEVL, a clinical decision support system for early detection of relapse risk in adolescents with substance use disorders. LEVL integrates physiological markers (heart rate, heart rate variability, sleep), behavioral data, and environmental context into an FHIR-compliant adaptive platform that...
- The National Institute on Drug Abuse awarded Biosyft Inc. $301,390 under the Drug Use and Addiction Research Programs (CFDA 93.279) on July 1, 2026, to develop and validate an AI-driven behavioral analysis platform for detecting addiction-like reward signatures in rodent models. Biosyft has built a multi-view chamber system with optimized computer vision models that tracks 29 points across rodents, compared to industry-standard approaches that rely on basic movement tracking or subjective...
- This $668,110 Project Grant awarded by the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA) under the Drug Use and Addiction Research Programs (CFDA 93.279) will fund the development and acceptability testing of a technology-based intervention to reduce cannabis misuse among college students. The project aims to refine an existing intervention that provides information on cannabis products, marketing, laws, and risks to increase young adults' cannabis literacy. The research will involve focus groups with...
- The National Institute on Drug Abuse awarded Arizona State University $314,000 on September 1, 2026, under the Drug Use and Addiction Research Programs (CFDA 93.279) to conduct secondary data analysis applying mediation mixture modeling and machine learning to identify heterogeneous risk pathways leading to youth substance use initiation. The project uses the Adolescent Brain Cognitive Development (ABCD) Study, a national longitudinal dataset tracking youths' behavioral health, to examine...
- The National Institute on Drug Abuse awarded Yale University $336,250 on April 1, 2026, under the Drug Use and Addiction Research Programs (CFDA 93.279) to develop a behavioral foundation model that transforms qualitative epidemiological survey responses into quantitative representations of substance use behaviors. The project harmonizes data from the National Epidemiologic Survey on Alcohol and Related Conditions III (NESARC-III), National Survey on Drug Use and Health (NSDUH), and UK Biobank...
- The National Institute on Drug Abuse awarded Carnegie Mellon University $217,672 on August 1, 2026, under the Drug Use and Addiction Research Programs (CFDA 93.279) to measure how addiction-associated genetic variants regulate gene expression across specific brain regions in response to opioids and cocaine. The research measures regulatory activity of candidate human addiction-associated genetic enhancers in the striatum, cortex, hippocampus, and amygdala of mice using in vivo massively parallel...
- The National Institute on Drug Abuse awarded The Johns Hopkins University $138,201 for a Project Grant on August 1, 2026, under the Drug Use and Addiction Research Programs (CFDA 93.279). The award funds the HOPES2 SMS study, which develops and evaluates a culturally grounded, reinforcement learning-powered personalized just-in-time adaptive intervention delivered via SMS text message to prevent cannabis use escalation and suicidal ideation among urban American Indian and Alaska Native youth....
- The National Institute on Drug Abuse awarded the University of California, San Diego $2.237 million on May 15, 2026, under the Drug Use and Addiction Research Programs (CFDA 93.279) to develop and apply a community-informed modeling approach for HIV and hepatitis C virus prevention resource allocation among people who use drugs. The project will develop large language models trained on behavioral and biological data from multiple people-who-use-drugs cohorts to generate...
The National Institute on Drug Abuse awarded Dfusion Inc. $304,907 on September 1, 2026, under the Drug Use and Addiction Research Programs (CFDA 93.279) to develop and pilot-test a prototype of LEVEL UP, a game-based learning intervention designed to prevent problem gambling in adolescents. The project addresses a documented public health gap: up to 12% of adolescents experience gambling-related problems, with prevalence rates 2–3 times higher than in adult populations. Gambling onset typically occurs around age 12, and earlier onset correlates with greater problem severity. Adolescent gambling is associated with financial issues, relationship problems, poorer mental and physical health, and adoption of other detrimental behaviors including alcohol consumption, substance abuse, risky driving, and delinquency. Despite the expansion of legalized and online gambling markets, few science-based prevention interventions currently exist for youth. Dfusion Inc., a woman-owned small business based in Scotts Valley, California, will develop the LEVEL UP prototype and conduct initial pilot testing during the Phase I award period. The work is performed in Santa Cruz, California, with a period of performance from September 1, 2026, through August 31, 2027. This is a Project Grant assistance type, representing a Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) Phase I award under NIDA's drug use and addiction research portfolio.
