About this award

The Tulare Basin Watershed Partnership received $299,675 in funding through the Bureau of Reclamation's Cooperative Watershed Management Program (CWMP, CFDA 15.554) awarded on August 20, 2025, with completion scheduled for March 31, 2028. The partnership will establish and facilitate a diverse watershed working group composed of community nonprofits, university researchers, agricultural groups, and natural resource management specialists focused on the Deer Creek and Tule River watersheds as part of the Sequoias to the Sloughs Initiative. The organization will develop stakeholder relationships and produce a comprehensive Watershed Improvement and Protection (WIP) Implementation Plan that integrates watershed and water resources management strategies.

The primary deliverables include continued stakeholder engagement activities to address long-term watershed challenges including drought, bark beetle infestation, high-intensity fires, and the residual impacts of the 2023 flooding events on frontline communities and agricultural economies in the Tulare Basin region near Fresno, California. The WIP Implementation Plan will establish an integrated, multi-beneficial approach to water resources management designed to mitigate the impacts of extreme climatic events and support sustainable watershed restoration across the project area.

Description

The tulare basin watershed partnership, located along the sequoia national forest near fresno, california, will continue to develop stakeholder relationships and develop a watershed plan in the tulare basin. For several decades, drought, bark beetle infestation, and high-intensity fires in the forested upper watersheds have negatively impacted the overall watershed. In addition, unprecedented widespread flooding in 2023 had lasting impacts on frontline communities and their agriculture-based economies. The partnership will develop and facilitate a diverse watershed working group including community nonprofits, university researchers, agricultural groups, and specialists in natural resource management, focused on the sequoias to the sloughs initiative for the deer creek and tule river watersheds. The partnership will also develop a watershed improvement and protection implementation plan which will be an integrated approach to watershed and water resources management for multi-beneficial uses aimed at mitigating the impacts of extreme climatic events in the region.
