About this award
The City of San Buenaventura in Ventura County, California was awarded a $16,592,500 project grant from the U.S. Department of the Interior's Bureau of Reclamation under the Reclamation States Emergency Drought Relief program (CFDA 15.514) to construct a 4.3 mile pipeline connecting the city to the Calleguas Municipal Water District. This will enable the city to access its existing State Water Project allocation, improving drought resiliency and water quality by blending with lower quality groundwater supplies. The project aims to provide the city access to an additional 5,400 acre-feet of water annually to address recent reductions in surface water availability that have negatively impacted local habitat and groundwater levels. The project grant was awarded on March 26, 2025 with an expected completion date of December 31, 2027.
Description
The CITY of buenaventura (CITY), located in ventura county, california, proposes to construct a 4.3 mile pipeline from the CITY to a connection with the CALLEGUAS municipal water district (CALLEGUAS) to enable access to the citys existing state water project (SWP) allocation. CALLEGUAS will wheel the supplies to the CITY via its and metropolitan water district of southern californias systems. The CITY presently meets its water demands exclusively through local surface and groundwater supplies making the CITY vulnerable in drought. Recent droughts have led to reductions in surface water availability, negatively impacting habitat for steelhead trout and other wildlife and declining groundwater levels. By accessing their SWP water, approximately 5,400 acre-feet per year will be available to improve the citys drought resiliency and will also improve water quality by blending lower quality groundwater supplies with the higher quality SWP water.
