Description
The purpose of the award is to improve water efficiency, provide flexibility during water shortages, and diversify the water supply by developing and supplementing urban and irrigation water supplies through water reuse. The recipient will complete planning activities for phase 2 of the pure water SAN diego (PROJECT). Currently, more than 85 percent of the recipients water is imported that are subject to significant hydrologic variability, leaving the recipient vulnerable to drought and other effects of climate change. The combined phases of the PROJECT are ultimately expected to add resiliency and reliability by providing water to nearly half of the recipients water supply and will reduce its dependence on imported water. Intended beneficiaries are the city of SAN diego S residential and commercial customers. The objectives of this PROJECT are to complete the planning studies and activities. The planned PROJECT is expected to treat wastewater to provide up to 53 million gallons per day of recycled water to the central part of SAN diego. A 5-step treatment process will be used to treat recycled water to potable standards for either direct or indirect reuse, using existing reservoirs to store the purified water. This agreement will be dedicated to conducting a series of planning studies essential for the successful execution of phase 2 of the pure water program. Planning studies activities include pure water energy needs evaluation, infrastructure locations evaluations, sea level rise evaluation, reservoir balance and purified water production evaluation, and environmental site assessments.
