Project Grant R22AP00270
- The Northern Colorado Water Conservancy District, in collaboration with the Kawuneeche Valley Ecosystem Restoration Collaborative (KVERC), received a $1,182,400 Project Grant award from the Department of the Interior's Bureau of Reclamation under the Aquatic Ecosystem Restoration Program (CFDA 15.580). The award will fund a study and design project to restore the Kawuneeche Valley in Rocky Mountain National Park to a natural beaver-willow ecosystem. Key activities include developing...
- The U.S. Department of the Interior's Bureau of Reclamation awarded a $359,919 WaterSMART (Sustain and Manage America's Resources for Tomorrow) Project Grant (CFDA 15.507) to the Coalition for the Poudre River Watershed (CPRW) to design upgrades to the Whitney and Eaton diversion structures on the Poudre River in northern Colorado. The project aims to improve fish passage and restore a half-mile section of the river, which is currently disconnected from its floodplain. Once complete, the...
- This $531,217 Project Grant awarded by the National Science Foundation's Biological Sciences program (CFDA 47.074) will fund a five-year collaborative research effort led by Washington State University to investigate the effects of beaver-based restoration on stream and riparian ecosystems across different precipitation regimes. The project aims to evaluate the impacts of beaver reintroduction and construction of beaver dam analogs on fish, amphibians, birds, bats, and mammals in both wet and...
- This three-year Project Grant from the National Science Foundation's Geosciences program (CFDA 47.050) provides $201,438 to Colorado State University to study the role of large wood in promoting channel-floodplain connectivity for river restoration. The university will collect data from natural channels on characteristics of logjam formations and their influence on hydrologic connectivity between channels and adjacent floodplains. Researchers will use this data to develop guidelines for...
- The Lefthand Watershed Oversight Group received a $299,196 Cooperative Watershed Management Program grant from the Bureau of Reclamation to expand existing watershed management planning within the St. Vrain watershed in Colorado. The group will develop a wildfire risk assessment, conduct a watershed-scale analysis, and identify, prioritize, and develop two to three key river restoration projects that complement ongoing forest mitigation efforts. The project aims to address the impacts of climate...
- The Bureau of Reclamation awarded a $144,746 Project Grant under the Fish and Wildlife Coordination Act (CFDA 15.517) program to establish an invasive species decontamination station at Lake Estes in Estes Park, Colorado. This critical infrastructure investment aims to safeguard the ecological health of the area and support recreational activities. By funding this project, the Bureau of Reclamation is enabling the awardee, Estes Valley Recreation and Parks District (Evrpd), to protect native...
- This $300,000 Project Grant award from the Bureau of Reclamation's Cooperative Watershed Management Program (CFDA 15.554) supports the Headwaters of the Colorado (HOC) Initiative, a multi-stakeholder collaboration focused on building resilient and functioning forested headwaters within the Little Snake and Yampa watersheds in Wyoming and Colorado. The funding will enable the HOC partnership, which includes federal and state land management agencies, private landowners, and local community...
- The Department of the Interior Fish and Wildlife Service Region 8 awarded a $124,345 cooperative agreement to the Klamath Watershed Partnership under the Partners for Fish and Wildlife program (CFDA 15.631) to install low-tech process-based restoration structures in the North Fork Sprague River from August 1, 2022 to July 31, 2027. The Klamath Watershed Partnership and Service will work together to install beaver dam analogs and post-assisted log structures to improve water quality for...
- The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, through its National Fish Passage Program (CFDA 15.685), awarded a $200,000 Cooperative Agreement to the Conservation Resource Alliance (CRA) to restore a road-stream crossing on Deer Creek. The project will replace a 7-foot diameter culvert with a 33-foot span timber bridge, reconnecting 5 miles of upstream channel to over 4 miles downstream. This will halt the annual input of up to 15 tons of sediment from road runoff entering Deer Creek, improving stream...
- The Big Thompson Watershed Coalition, a non-profit organization in Loveland, Colorado, received a $630,000 Project Grant from the USDA Forest Service under the Cooperative Forestry Assistance program (CFDA 10.664). The three-year award, effective September 10, 2023, supports the coalition's efforts to lead reforestation and vegetation restoration in the Cameron Peak fire burn area. Key activities include coordinating tree seedling production and distribution to mitigate future wildfire risks....
THE ESTES VALLEY WATERSHED COALITION WILL CONSTRUCT A SIMULATED BEAVER STRUCTURE ON FISH CREEK TO RECONNECT THE RIVER TO THE FLOODPLAIN JUST OUTSIDE OF ESTES PARK, COLORADO. EXTENSIVE FLOODING IN 2013 SCOURED THE CHANNEL AND DISCONNECTED FISH CREEK FROM THE FLOODPLAIN. THE COALITION WILL BUILD THE SIMULATED BEAVER STRUCTURE DOWNSTREAM FROM A SIMILAR STRUCTURE BUILT IN 2018, IN AN AREA THAT WAS A HISTORIC BEAVER MEADOW. THE PROJECT WILL MITIGATE FLOOD AND WILDFIRE RISK, REDUCE EROSION, IMPROVE HABITAT, AND INCREASE OVERALL ECOLOGICAL RESILIENCE OF THE WATERSHED. THE PROJECT AREA AND NEED FOR FLOODPLAIN RESTORATION ARE IDENTIFIED AS A PRIORITY IN THE FISH CREEK CORRIDOR PLAN FOR RESILIENCY. THE PROJECT IS SUPPORTED BY THE TOWN OF ESTES PARK, COLORADO STATE UNIVERSITY, THE NORTHERN WATER CONSERVATION DISTRICT, AND PRIVATE LANDOWNERS.
