The project delivers a fully automated, CRISPR-based nucleic acid detection platform integrated with a bioinspired microfluidic chip (CAMOCHIP) that simultaneously detects HIV viral load and...
- The National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases awarded Case Western Reserve University $235,500 on April 17, 2026, under the Allergy and Infectious Diseases Research program (CFDA 93.855) to investigate plasma cell-free hemoglobin and red blood cell-derived extracellular vesicles as drivers of cardiovascular disease risk in people with HIV. The research addresses a gap in understanding why HIV-positive individuals face a twofold higher cardiovascular disease risk despite effective...
- The National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute awarded Case Western Reserve University $431,750 on August 15, 2026, under the Cardiovascular Diseases Research program (CFDA 93.837) to investigate cell-free hemoglobin and red blood cell-derived extracellular vesicles as contributors to immune dysregulation and cardiovascular disease risk in people with HIV. The award funds research into the hypothesis that extracellular vesicles containing cell-free hemoglobin trigger endothelial dysfunction and...
- The National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, National Institutes of Health, awarded Case Western Reserve University $467,580 on February 20, 2026, under the Allergy and Infectious Diseases Research program (CFDA 93.855) to investigate cytomegalovirus reactivation in vascular tissue of people with HIV and its contribution to cardiovascular disease. The research defines the spatial context of CMV expression in vascular tissues of people with HIV and without HIV, with and without...
- The National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases awarded the University of Illinois $1.506 million on September 16, 2025, under the Allergy and Infectious Diseases Research program (CFDA 93.855) to develop a human factors-designed point-of-care test for simultaneous detection of HIV, HBV, and HCV viral loads in whole blood. The award funds development of a microfluidic cartridge, molecular biology method, biosensor using crumpled graphene readout, and detection instrument capable of...
- The National Cancer Institute awarded Case Western Reserve University $100,228 on December 1, 2026, under the Cancer Research Manpower program (CFDA 93.398) to develop real-time monitoring of nanobubble-labeled chimeric antigen receptor T cell trafficking via contrast-enhanced ultrasound imaging. The award funds research to refine nanobubble labeling protocols for prostate-specific membrane antigen (PSMA)-targeting CAR-T cells, enhancing imaging duration and stability to enable extended...
- The Department of Health and Human Services National Institutes of Health Fogarty International Center awarded Aminu Kano Teaching Hospital $232,347 on June 1, 2026, under the International Research and Research Training program (CFDA 93.989) to investigate metabolic complications among persons with HIV in Nigeria, specifically weight gain and metabolic dysfunction following integrase strand transfer inhibitor-based antiretroviral therapy. The research determines the effect of substantial...
- The National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases awarded Case Western Reserve University $631,401 on September 1, 2026, under the Allergy and Infectious Diseases Research program (CFDA 93.855) to develop human monoclonal antibodies targeting Plasmodium vivax malaria. The research focuses on isolating and optimizing monoclonal antibodies (MAbs) that target the parasite's apical membrane protein 1 (AMA1) and circumsporozoite protein (CSP) to prevent and treat vivax malaria, which...
- The National Institutes of Health Fogarty International Center awarded $133,103 to the Centre for Infectious Disease Research in Zambia (CIDRZ) on August 15, 2026, under the International Research and Research Training program (CFDA 93.989) to establish and operate a research training program on hepatitis B virus. The BEAT-HBV program will train U.S. and Zambian new and early-stage investigators, master's and doctoral students, and postdoctoral fellows in HBV research methods and clinical and...
- The National Institutes of Health Fogarty International Center awarded $548,242 to the Centre for Infectious Disease Research in Zambia on August 20, 2026, under the International Research and Research Training program (CFDA 93.989) to conduct the CAREZ study, a hybrid effectiveness-implementation cluster randomized stepped-wedge trial evaluating integrated screening and management of cardiometabolic noncommunicable diseases among people living with HIV in Zambia. The study will implement the...
The National Institutes of Health Fogarty International Center awarded Case Western Reserve University $440,709 on August 15, 2026, under the International Research and Research Training program (CFDA 93.989) to develop TRI-CARE, a mobile health platform for rapid viral load testing of HIV-1, hepatitis B virus, and hepatitis C virus. TRI-CARE integrates cellphone-based, AI-powered diagnostics with a microfluidic cartridge system to enable decentralized, real-time viral load monitoring in settings with limited healthcare infrastructure. The R21 phase focuses on optimizing the microfluidic platform and functionalizing color-encoded beads with target-specific antibodies for direct capture and detection of HIV-1 RNA from blood samples, coupled with cellphone-based optical detection. The planned R33 phase will conduct clinical validation using 100–200 patient samples, including specimens from Nigeria, to assess sensitivity, specificity, accuracy, and usability against gold-standard qPCR-based testing. Nigerian samples provide validation across high HIV-1 and viral hepatitis burden contexts and real-world collection and handling variability. Work is performed in Cleveland, Ohio, at Case Western Reserve University's Office of Research Administration, operating in affiliation with University Hospitals of Cleveland. The project period runs through June 30, 2028.
