Project Grant R21HD123315
- The National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke awarded the University of Florida $187,317 on July 20, 2026, to characterize the endometriosis microbiome and metabolomic pain phenotype under the Drug Use and Addiction Research Programs (CFDA 93.279). The project stratifies individuals with endometriosis into treatment-responsive groups by identifying differences in microbial and NAD+ metabolomic patterns associated with differing pain characteristics, quality of life, psychological...
- The National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke awarded the University of Massachusetts Medical School $578,007 on August 1, 2026, for research on the gut-brain axis and microbial impact on neural function under the Extramural Research Programs in the Neurosciences and Neurological Disorders program (CFDA 93.853). The project investigates mechanistic links between diet, gut microbiota, and neurological disorders including depression, migraine, anxiety, autism, schizophrenia, and...
- The National Institutes of Health National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health awarded The McLean Hospital Corporation $3.374 million on July 20, 2026, under the Research and Training in Complementary and Integrative Health program (CFDA 93.213) to conduct a two-phase, milestone-driven study assessing the mechanisms and clinical impact of a high-CBD cannabinoid product on gynecologic pain. The project will evaluate a full-spectrum cannabidiol product (250 mg/ml) containing additional...
- The National Institute of Child Health and Human Development awarded the University of Texas at Dallas $608,387 on July 1, 2026, under the Child Health and Human Development Extramural Research program (CFDA 93.865) to investigate vaginal microbiome-nociceptor interactions in endometriosis pain. The research uses mouse models of endometriosis, intravaginal antibiotic treatment, vaginal microbiota transplant paradigms, and probiotic bacterial administration to explore the bidirectional...
- The National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke, part of the Department of Health and Human Services National Institutes of Health, awarded Massachusetts Institute of Technology $129,168 on August 1, 2026, under the Extramural Research Programs in the Neurosciences and Neurological Disorders program (CFDA 93.853) to support research on the modulation of autonomic function by affective pain pathways. The research interrogates the role of the parabrachial-limbic circuit and...
- The National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke awarded The Children's Hospital Corporation, doing business as Boston Children's Hospital, $3.637 million on August 24, 2026, under the Drug Use and Addiction Research Programs (CFDA 93.279) to identify pro-resolving lipid mediator receptors as therapeutic targets for endometriosis-associated pain. The project runs through April 30, 2030, and is performed in Massachusetts. The research aims to identify the most active specialized...
- The National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases awarded The General Hospital Corporation (Massachusetts General Hospital) $667,788 under Project Grant R01DK145599 on April 1, 2026, to identify neural signatures of gastric interoceptive processing in functional dyspepsia. The recipient will conduct multidisciplinary neuroimaging and behavioral research examining three dimensions of how the gut and brain communicate: gastric attention, interpretation of gastric signals, and...
- The National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute awarded the University of Texas at Dallas $641,538 on August 15, 2026, under the Cardiovascular Diseases Research program (CFDA 93.837, Assistance Listing R01HL181083) to investigate gut microbiome targets for sickle cell disease pain management. The research addresses chronic pain in individuals with sickle cell disease, a leading complication that persists despite advances in disease-modifying and curative therapies and is often managed with...
- The National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases awarded Connecticut Children's Medical Center $782,101 on July 1, 2026, under the Diabetes, Digestive, and Kidney Diseases Extramural Research program (CFDA 93.847) to conduct a longitudinal study examining pain-related stigma in adolescents with disorders of gut-brain interaction. The recipient will conduct a multi-center study enrolling 230 adolescents ages 12 to 17 with painful disorders of gut-brain interaction, including...
- The National Institute of Mental Health awarded the University of Massachusetts Medical School $474,500 on August 1, 2026, under the Mental Health Research Grants program (CFDA 93.242) to investigate the relationship between puberty, interoceptive neural networks, and anxiety symptoms in adolescents. The research employs functional magnetic resonance imaging to characterize how pubertal changes to cortical body representation in primary somatosensory and insular cortices relate to...
The National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke awarded The McLean Hospital Corporation $468,368 on September 5, 2026, to investigate the relationship between gut microbiome composition, multisensory sensitivity, and pain experience in adolescent girls with primary dysmenorrhea under CFDA 93.279 (Drug Use and Addiction Research Programs). The project will evaluate how alterations in gut microbiome composition contribute to multisensory sensitivity—heightened sensitivity to non-painful sensory modalities including visual, auditory, tactile, and visceral stimuli—and the experience of menstrual pain in adolescents ages 13–19 with moderate-to-severe primary dysmenorrhea. The study will measure menstrual pain severity and interference, body pain, multisensory sensitivities across modalities using quantitative testing paradigms, and gut microbiome composition from stool samples. Primary dysmenorrhea affects 71.1% of adolescent girls and young women and impairs functioning in school, work, and social activities; it is also a known risk factor for chronic pain conditions. McLean Hospital, a nonprofit psychiatric teaching hospital affiliated with Harvard Medical School, serves as the recipient and will conduct research at its Belmont, Massachusetts location. The period of performance runs from September 5, 2026, through August 31, 2028. This is a Project Grant, an assistance type providing direct funding for a specified project period.
