Project Grant R21HD123083
- The National Institute of Child Health and Human Development awarded Kessler Foundation, Inc. $562,228 on June 1, 2026, under the Child Health and Human Development Extramural Research program (CFDA 93.865) to conduct a project grant investigating transcutaneous spinal cord stimulation for blood pressure regulation and orthostatic hypotension in individuals with spinal cord injury. The study will recruit ten individuals at least one year post-spinal cord injury with orthostatic hypotension and...
- The National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke awarded Drexel University $149,190 on July 14, 2026, under CFDA 93.853 (Extramural Research Programs in the Neurosciences and Neurological Disorders) to conduct research on transcutaneous spinal cord stimulation and its mechanisms for reducing spasticity following spinal cord injury. The research investigates whether transcutaneous spinal cord stimulation improves spasticity after spinal cord injury by upregulating KCC2, a chloride...
- The National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke awarded Yale University a $3.306 million cooperative agreement on May 22, 2026, to conduct a double-blind, randomized, placebo-controlled clinical trial examining the combined effect of intrathecal AXER-204 (a soluble NGR receptor decoy) and rehabilitative training for chronic incomplete cervical spinal cord injury. The trial builds on a prior first-in-human study (RESET) that demonstrated safety and tolerability of AXER-204 in cervical...
- The federal Project Grant award in the amount of $3,998,455 was provided by the Defense Health Agency under the Military Medical Research and Development program (CFDA 12.420) to the Kessler Foundation, Inc. The award funds a 4-year research project investigating the utilization effects of powered wearable orthotics in improving upper extremity function and activities of daily living for persons with spinal cord injuries. The Kessler Foundation, a non-profit organization focused on disability...
- The National Institute of Child Health and Human Development awarded The Research Foundation For The State University of New York $425,712 on June 10, 2026, under the Child Health and Human Development Extramural Research program (CFDA 93.865) to evaluate noninvasive neuromodulation for improving hand motor function in multiple sclerosis. The project examines paired corticospinal-motoneuronal stimulation (PCMS), a mechanism-driven neuromodulation approach that pairs transcranial magnetic...
- The National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke awarded Mayo Clinic $622,784 on July 21, 2026, under the Extramural Research Programs in the Neurosciences and Neurological Disorders program (CFDA 93.853) to investigate acute and chronic repercussions of spinal cord stimulation following spinal cord injury. The research quantifies blood pressure instability after spinal cord injury, which interrupts descending autonomic regulatory signals and causes loss of consciousness, stroke,...
- The National Institute of Child Health and Human Development awarded Texas A&M University $424,582 on July 1, 2026, under the Child Health and Human Development Extramural Research program (CFDA 93.865) to support research on boosting corticospinal plasticity and motor neuron excitability via ultrasonic spinal cord stimulation. The project addresses motor impairments resulting from spinal cord injury, which affects over 300,000 individuals in the United States with approximately 18,000 new...
- The National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke, part of the Department of Health and Human Services National Institutes of Health, awarded $580,605 to The Children's Hospital Corporation, doing business as Boston Children's Hospital, on August 7, 2026, under the Extramural Research Programs in the Neurosciences and Neurological Disorders program (CFDA 93.853). The award funds research investigating the organization, plasticity, and regenerative capacity of reticulospinal neurons...
- The National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke awarded The Cleveland VA Medical Research & Education Foundation $572,132 on August 22, 2026, under the Extramural Research Programs in the Neurosciences and Neurological Disorders program (CFDA 93.853) to design and test a prototype noninvasive electrical stimulation device and determine its effect on bladder control for women with spinal cord injury–related neurogenic bladder dysfunction. The project targets bladder hyperreflexia,...
- The National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke awarded a cooperative agreement to Case Western Reserve University for $1,202,540 on September 1, 2026, to conduct an exploratory trial of the RESTORES (Revolutionary Electrical Stimulation Technology to Optimize Recovery of Everyone with Spinal Cord Injury) system. The recipient will customize and program open-source Networked Neuroprosthesis (NNP) components—a modular peripheral neurostimulation device designed to address multiple...
The National Institute of Child Health and Human Development awarded Kessler Foundation, Inc. $385,776 on September 1, 2026, under CFDA 93.865 (Child Health and Human Development Extramural Research) to conduct a randomized, sham-controlled trial investigating focused extracorporeal shockwave therapy as an adjunctive treatment for spasticity secondary to spinal cord injury. The trial will enroll thirty subjects to evaluate the effectiveness and safety of focused extracorporeal shockwave therapy when combined with botulinum toxin type-A in individuals with spinal cord injury. Prior studies have demonstrated the therapy's effectiveness in stroke populations, including as an adjunctive treatment to botox, but no published clinical trials exist for spinal cord injury populations. The proposed work builds on the recipient's pilot randomized, controlled trial, which produced promising results but was limited by recruitment constraints. Kessler Foundation will perform the work in West Orange, New Jersey. The period of performance runs from September 1, 2026, through June 30, 2028. This is a Project Grant, the standard assistance type for NIH research.
