Description
- Abstract
- This R-13 grant application requests support for the conference entitled 2026 teaching kitchen research conference (TKRC) to be held at the hilton boston back BAY on september 23-24, 2026. This will be the fourth time this conference is being offered and will be sponsored by harvard university along with the teaching kitchen collaborative (TKC). All prior conferences have been CO-funded through R13 grants from nccih grant # 1 R13 AT009822-01 (2018); # 1 R13 at 010554-01 (2020); and # 1 R13 AT011986 (2022). Together, the TKRC events have attracted over 3,000 participants in the US and internationally and have featured more than 200 research abstracts. With strong alignment to NIH priorities, the TKRC supports advancing science that promotes evidence-based prevention, empowers individuals to achieve their health goals, and supports healthy lifestyle transformation to reduce chronic disease and health disparities. Conference archives are available at tkresearchconference.ORG. In the four years since the last TKRC, interest in this field has expanded significantly. The teaching kitchen collaborative (TKC) has grown from 40 to over 70 organization and corporate members and also includes more than 350 professional members. This professional network is expanding rapidly, with organizations and schools that are committed to rigorous evaluation of teaching kitchen models and assessment of their influence on health behaviors, clinical outcomes, and healthcare utilization. Teaching kitchens have gained further traction through integration into medical nutrition competencies and as a core element of the food is medicine movement. Given this momentum, we anticipate a robust number of original scientific abstract submissions and strong participation for the 2026 TKRC. The goals of the 2026 teaching kitchen research conference are to: 1. Provide a forum to showcase and advance original research related to teaching kitchens; including studies on implementation science, clinical effectiveness, cost-efficiency, best practices, and scalable teaching kitchen models. 2. Disseminate and share findings to support reproducible and collaborative demonstration projects to propel this growing field and future studies. 3. Advance cross-disciplinary innovation and collaboration by bringing together a diverse set of researchers, payers, and investors; public, community, and clinical health professionals and administrators; culinary and nutrition instructors; and higher education faculty for multidisciplinary collaborations to advance this field of health.
