- The National Institute of Child Health and Human Development awarded Brigham & Women's Hospital Inc. $631,658 on June 5, 2026, under the Child Health and Human Development Extramural Research program (CFDA 93.865) to investigate the role of caudate-putamen Kiss1 neurons in female minipuberty, reproductive maturation, and cognitive function. The award funds research characterizing a sexually dimorphic population of Kiss1/GnRH co-expressing neurons in the caudate putamen that appear to drive...
- The National Institute of Child Health and Human Development awarded the University of California, San Diego $650,472 on September 1, 2026, under the Child Health and Human Development Extramural Research Program (CFDA 93.865) to investigate how adrenergic signaling from brainstem norepinephrine neurons regulates reproductive neuroendocrine circuits in response to chronic psychosocial stress. The research addresses how stress impairs kisspeptin neuron function and downstream luteinizing...
- The National Institute of Child Health and Human Development awarded the University of California, San Diego $440,000 on July 1, 2026, under the Child Health and Human Development Extramural Research program (CFDA 93.865) to characterize brainstem noradrenergic circuits controlling reproductive function. The research investigates how chronic psychosocial stress impairs reproductive capacity through inhibition of hypothalamic kisspeptin neuron function, which leads to reduced luteinizing...
- The National Institute of Child Health and Human Development awarded Syracuse University $323,643 on June 1, 2026, under the Child Health and Human Development Extramural Research program (CFDA 93.865) to investigate molecular interactions between the female reproductive tract and sperm that determine fertility. The research characterizes female-derived metabolic proteins and their spatiotemporally regulated interactions with sperm during storage and transit in the female reproductive tract....
- The National Institute of Child Health and Human Development awarded The Regents of the University of California, San Francisco $123,147 on September 1, 2026, under the Child Health and Human Development Extramural Research program (CFDA 93.865). The award funds research investigating granulosa-derived RNAs as targets for oocyte rejuvenation and age-related oocyte quality infertility. The project comprises three aims: interrogating the mechanism by which RNAs transfer from granulosa cells to...
- The National Institute of Child Health and Human Development awarded Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, Inc. $129,377 on September 1, 2026, under the Child Health and Human Development Extramural Research program (CFDA 93.865) to investigate relationships between sexual behavior rhythms, core body temperature, and sleep in female mice and their implications for fertility. The research will identify brain circuits regulating female sexual behavior rhythms, determine whether mild cooling...
- The National Institute of Child Health and Human Development awarded the University of South Florida $114,237 on June 5, 2026, under the Child Health and Human Development Extramural Research program (CFDA 93.865) to conduct research dissecting estrogen receptor alpha (ERA) functions in anteroventral and periventricular medial preoptic area neurons co-expressing the long-form leptin receptor. The research examines how ERA signaling as a nuclear receptor and mRNA-binding protein—distinct from...
- The National Institute of Child Health and Human Development (NICHD) awarded the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences $886,696 on July 1, 2026, under the Child Health and Human Development Extramural Research program (CFDA 93.865) to conduct basic science research on gonadotrope development and reproductive function in female mice. The award funds a five-year research project through April 30, 2031, examining how the adipokine leptin regulates gonadotrope network development and...
- The National Institute of Child Health and Human Development awarded the Buck Institute for Research on Aging $194,000 on September 1, 2026, under the Child Health and Human Development Extramural Research program (CFDA 93.865) to investigate ovarian aging through the three-dimensional lymphatic network. The research examines how the lymphatic vasculature contributes to ovarian function across adulthood and aging, with focus on three-dimensional lymphatic structure and function and...
- The National Institute of Child Health and Human Development awarded the University of Rochester $149,190 on February 1, 2026, under the Child Health and Human Development Extramural Research Projects program (CFDA 93.865) to investigate the molecular mechanisms of sperm dysfunction induced by meiotic drive. The project combines gene editing, genetic, and cytological approaches to study segregation distorter (SD), a sperm-killing male meiotic driver found in natural populations of Drosophila...
The National Institute of Child Health and Human Development awarded Albany Medical College $164,000 on September 1, 2026, under the Child Health and Human Development Extramural Research program (CFDA 93.865) to investigate the role of AVPV KISS1 neurons in modulating female and male reproduction. The research addresses mechanisms controlling fertility through the hypothalamic-pituitary-gonadal axis. KISS1 neurons in the anteroventral periventricular nucleus are hypothesized to mediate estradiol-induced luteinizing hormone surge and ovarian cycles in females, but whether these neurons are required for the LH surge, regular ovulation, and fertility remains unknown. The project will examine kisspeptin signaling, which stimulates GnRH neurons and is essential for reproductive hormone release; mutations in KISS1 or its receptor cause severe fertility deficits. Understanding the brain's role in regulating fertility may inform development of new infertility treatments, addressing current limitations where existing treatments average 3–30% success rates depending on the woman's age and cost remains prohibitive. Work is performed in Albany, New York, with a period of performance from September 1, 2026, through August 31, 2028. This is a project grant, an assistance type supporting investigator-initiated research.
