(RE)learning ahupuaa aims at connecting teachers, educators, and community partners to provide free place-based environmental stewardship education to 1,155 title i school students from three ahupuaa (land divisions): waimnalo, kahuku and waianae. This project addresses both professional development and education experience needs. IT will include capacity building, curriculum development, and training for educators and teachers through 34 hours of training and 12 hours of workshops per semester in close collaboration with a network of 12 local partners. We will also facilitate a total of 56 in-class workshops and 39 field trips, inviting students to learn from local stewards how to connect the dots between regenerative agriculture, land restoration, stream and beach cleanups and foster a sense of kuleana (responsibility), curiosity and creativity in the heart of their watershed. By taking a collaborative approach and developing open-access resources, sustainable coastlines hawaii aspires to create a scalable, place-based outdoor education model rooted in indigenous and local knowledge.
