Description

Through a broad partnership, k-12 students will learn about the regions rich cultural history, including traditional ahupuaa (watershed) management, watershed ecology and hydrology, and terrestrial impacts on the marine ecosystem, as told through its impact on coral reefs. The project team will expand upon already created in-classroom educational materials and greatly expand opportunities for students to experience the lessons in non-traditional outdoor educational exercises. Select students will take part in a week-long, outdoor camp in the maunalua watershed incorporating the classroom educational principles into an inquiry-based scientific, restoration, and cultural experience. Teachers will be trained on how to use the developed materials, which will be linked to department of education scientific guidelines and available for all educators statewide.
