Description

Students in grades 3-5 at the lummi nation school, a state tribal education compact school, will complete meaningful watershed education experiences around three topics: shellfish, salmon, and watersheds. Students in each grade will have 2-3 classroom sessions and 3 field trips with lummi natural resources as they move through the learning cycle. Classroom sessions involve connecting students to the learning through salmon and clam storytelling and collective knowing, as well as question-asking (i.e. how do clams and oysters clean the water?), issue definition, and utilizing NOAA educational assets. Outdoor field experiences and environmental action projects include things like hatchery tours, salmon release, beach cleanups, ceremony, and restoration projects. Students share their learning through story, storyboards, videos, and other assessment techniques determined with their teacher. This project will work with 125 unique students and 6-9 teachers over two years. Of these students, 66 will have mwees for two years.
