About this award

This federal Project Grant award of $1,000,000.00 from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) under the Congressionally Identified Awards and Projects program (CFDA 11.469) will fund a planning study to design aquaculture facilities. The study will provide conceptual drawings, engineering specifications, 3D renderings, and other materials to support the development of seawater intake and discharge systems, filtration and recirculating aquaculture technology, as well as improvements to utility infrastructure, structural requirements, shore-side access, and supporting administrative and storage functions. The award to the San Diego Unified Port District, doing business as the Port of San Diego, will run from March 1, 2025 through February 28, 2029. This planning effort aims to facilitate the establishment of various upstream and downstream aquaculture operations, including hatcheries, nurseries, grow-out facilities, processing, and distribution.

Description

A planning study is needed to design aquaculture facilities that can provide seawater intake and discharge systems, including filtration and other recirculating aquaculture technology that can support upstream hatchery and nurseries, grow-out, and the downstream processing, depuration, and distribution facilities for various types of aquaculture businesses. The study would also identify needed improvements regarding utility upgrades, structural requirements, shore-side access, including dock infrastructure and safety requirements to support administrative, storage, and other related functions. This project would provide conceptual drawings and associated engineering specifications to best predict development timelines, goals, and operating budgets, including detailed 3D renderings, architectural specifications, civil works, site layouts and all associated materials.
