The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration awarded a $750,000 cooperative agreement to the New England Interstate Water Pollution Control Commission through December 2027 under the Congressionally Identified Awards and Projects program (CFDA #11.469). The award will support several elements of an environmental monitoring network in Lake Champlain, including improved understanding of contaminants of concern through targeted sampling and development of a future monitoring framework. It will also fund cyanotoxin testing of recreational water samples to enhance understanding of public health risks from cyanobacteria blooms. Real-time in-situ monitoring instrumentation will increase data resolution for environmental condition and trend analysis across lake regions. Products and services under this cooperative agreement will enhance the scientific understanding and management of environmental issues in Lake Champlain.

The Marine Mammal Center (TMMC) was awarded a $1,000,000 Project Grant from the Department of Commerce National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration under the Congressionally Identified Awards and Projects program (CFDA 11.469). The grant will support TMMC's 24-hour marine mammal stranding response hotline and dispatch team to manage over 10,000 annual calls regarding sick, injured, orphaned, entangled or stranded seals, sea lions, sea otters, whales, dolphins and sea turtles in California. Funding will also ensure TMMC can care for stranded marine mammals brought to its facility for medical treatment, including endangered and threatened species. In addition to responding to non-endangered marine mammals, TMMC will continue its first responder role to support recovery of endangered and threatened species.

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration awarded a $4 million cooperative agreement to Florida International University on September 1, 2022 through the Congressionally Identified Awards and Projects program (CFDA 11.469) to establish a monitoring network and database capturing the biological and biochemical diversity of phytoplankton and water quality measurements in Biscayne Bay, Florida. As part of a larger effort, Florida International University will provide 80 water samples per year from 10 sites in Biscayne Bay to Florida Gulf Coast University for extraction and analysis of up to seven classes of algal toxins using enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) methodology. Florida Gulf Coast University will also provide annual reports summarizing the toxin analysis results. The products will be incorporated into a publicly available database to guide resource managers in stewarding Biscayne Bay and detecting harmful algal blooms.
