About this award

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) awarded The University of Southern Mississippi $5.0 million under the Congressionally Identified Awards and Projects program (CFDA 11.469) on September 1, 2025, with a completion date of August 31, 2029. The project enhances the Data Assembly Hub for Uncrewed Systems (DAH), specifically advancing AquaView, a metadata management portal for oceanographic and atmospheric datasets. The funding supports the next phase of development to expand AquaView's functionality, enabling advanced analytics capabilities, improved scalability, and seamless integration of artificial intelligence-driven tools to better serve the research community and maximize the utility of NOAA-custodied data.

The project represents a strategic modernization effort to position AquaView as a flagship NOAA system and model for adaptive, intelligent metadata management. By enhancing the platform's technical infrastructure, the initiative aims to enable researchers and data scientists to derive actionable insights from oceanographic and atmospheric data more efficiently, fostering collaboration across government, academia, and industry while reducing operational inefficiencies and driving innovation in data-driven research ecosystems.

Description

Recognizing this need, a collaborative partnership between government, academia, and industry has given rise to the data assembly hub for uncrewed systems (DAH). Initially seeded by NOAA funding, this initiative has produced aquaview, a groundbreaking portal that simplifies metadata management and access for oceanographic and atmospheric datasets. As NOAA continues to act as the primary custodian of this vital data, enhancing aquaviews capabilities has become an urgent priority. However, as the volume and complexity of data continue to grow, so do the challenges. The next phase of this project seeks to address these challenges by enhancing aquaviews functionality to support advanced analytics, scalability, and seamless integration of AI-driven tools. The significance of this project extends far beyond technical improvements. IT represents a strategic alignment with the needs of modern research ecosystems. By enabling researchers and data scientists to derive actionable insights from their data, aquaview fosters collaboration, reduces inefficiencies, and drives innovation. The proposed upgrades aim to position aquaview as a flagship NOAA system and a model for adaptive, intelligent metadata management.
