The National Science Foundation (NSF) awarded a $3,545,442 Cooperative Agreement under the Integrative Activities (CFDA 47.083) program to the University of Alaska Fairbanks (UAF) to develop collaborative research capacity and generate environmental data and tools to help coastal communities in Alaska adapt to climate change impacts on marine resources.
The "Interface of Change" (IOC) project will engage Alaska Native communities to understand the effects of climate-driven changes,...
This $499,823 Cooperative Agreement award from the U.S. Geological Survey's (USGS) National and Regional Climate Adaptation Science Centers (CFDA# 15.820) will support research to understand and address climate change impacts on salmon populations and their habitats in the Yukon River basin. The project aims to document, quantify, and map the cumulative effects of climate, species interactions, and habitat changes to identify the most effective local and regional actions to support salmon...
This $334,196 federal Cooperative Agreement award, funded by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) under the Cooperative Institute (Inter-Agency Funded Activities) program (CFDA 11.405), will support research to address climate change impacts on fishing communities in Alaska's Arctic region. The University of Washington is the prime awardee for this 4-year project, which aims to identify climate vulnerabilities and information needs to inform adaptation strategies for...
This $682,107 federal Project Grant award from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) under the Pacific Coast Salmon Recovery Pacific Salmon Treaty Program (CFDA 11.438) aims to mitigate the economic impacts of reduced Chinook salmon harvest levels in Southeast Alaska. The key objectives are to increase hatchery production or survival to offset harvest losses associated with a 2009 revision to the Pacific Salmon Treaty.
The grant provides funding for several sub-awards to...
This $43,730,937 project grant award from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) under the Fisheries Disaster Relief program (CFDA 11.477) will support the Pacific States Marine Fisheries Commission (PSMFC) in responding to recent fisheries disasters in Alaska. Specifically, the grant funding will be used to analyze commercial revenue loss information and distribute aid to eligible disasters, including the 2018 Upper Cook Inlet East Side Setnet Salmon and 2020 Upper Cook...
This federal Cooperative Agreement award from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) under the Climate and Atmospheric Research program (CFDA 11.431) provides $348,835 to the University of Alaska Fairbanks to develop a holistic and equitable ocean modeling and prediction system to address the climate challenges facing the Arctic region. The key products and services to be delivered include:
Collectively developing and evaluating a skillful hindcast simulation and...
The University of Alaska Anchorage will receive $1.5 million from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration under the Congressionally Identified Awards and Projects program to coordinate research on watershed ecosystem support for salmon through August 2025. As the prime awardee, UAA will utilize partnerships with the Kachemak Bay National Estuarine Research Reserve and local tribes to conduct expanded baseline studies on ecological impacts to salmon health. Key products include the...
The Kodiak Tribal Climate Adaptation Plan project received a $149,314 Project Grant award from the Department of the Interior Bureau of Indian Affairs Central Office. The funding supports development of a climate adaptation plan under the Tribal Climate Resilience program (CFDA 15.156).
The Kodiak Area Native Association will use the August 16, 2021 through August 15, 2023 award period to better understand climate change impacts and vulnerabilities in Kodiak, Alaska. Specifically, the...
This $18,088,000 federal Project Grant award from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) under the Pacific Coast Salmon Recovery Pacific Salmon Treaty Program (CFDA 11.438) supports a variety of projects necessary to maintain healthy salmon populations and protect or restore their habitats in Alaska.
The primary awardee, the Alaska Department of Fish & Game, will use the funding to implement a myriad of conservation-focused initiatives selected through a rigorous...
This $300,000 Project Grant award from the National Science Foundation's Geosciences Program (CFDA 47.050) to the University of Alaska Fairbanks aims to explore the links between climate change and traditional food intake in Alaska Native communities. The research team, which includes geoscientists, nutrition biologists, and public health professionals, will examine long-term trends in climate variables like temperature, precipitation, and sea ice extent, and their impact on subsistence food...
CLIMATE CHANGE HAS TAKEN HOLD IN GULF OF ALASKA FISHERIES, WITH NUMEROUS FISHERIES DISASTERS OVER THE LAST SEVERAL YEARS, AND CONTINUING ECOSYSTEM CHANGES THAT ARE ALTERING FOUNDATIONAL RELATIONSHIPS BETWEEN THE PEOPLE IN THE REGION AND THE PLACE. ACROSS THE MANY GEOGRAPHICALLY ISOLATED AND FISHING DEPENDENT COMMUNITIES WITHIN THE GULF OF ALASKA, FISHERIES LOSSES MAY BE DEVASTATING FOR LOCAL ECONOMIES THAT LACK ECONOMIC DIVERSITY, MAINTAIN FISHING- DEPENDENT FOOD SYSTEMS, AND HAVE CULTURAL FISHING PRACTICES THAT CANNOT BE REPLACED. DESPITE THE TREMENDOUS COSTS OF DECLINING FISHERIES IN THE REGION, THERE IS A DEARTH OF ADAPTATION PLANNING TO ENSURE THE RESILIENCE OF FISHING COMMUNITIES INTO THE FUTURE. THIS PROJECT ADDRESSES THE CRITICAL NEED FOR FISHING COMMUNITIES IN THE GULF OF ALASKA TO FORMALIZE FISHERIES RESILIENCE STRATEGIES IN ADAPTATION PLANS, FOCUSING ON THREE OF THE MOST HIGHLY DEPENDENT AND DIVERSE FISHING COMMUNITIES IN THE REGION - CORDOVA, KODIAK, AND SITKA.
