About this award
The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) awarded a $23.94M Project Grant under the Pacific Coast Salmon Recovery Pacific Salmon Treaty Program (CFDA 11.438) to fund habitat restoration projects in Idaho that will address limiting factors and increase abundance and productivity of endangered Snake River steelhead, spring/summer Chinook salmon, and sockeye salmon. Key project activities include improving fish passage by replacing barriers, restoring streambanks and floodplains, increasing habitat complexity, and monitoring juvenile salmonid population responses. Sub-awardees such as the Nez Perce Tribe, local soil and water conservation districts, and the Idaho Department of Fish and Game will implement on-the-ground restoration work, develop engineered designs, acquire land rights, and conduct effectiveness monitoring across multiple watersheds in the state.
Description
Priority one. Habitat restoration projects selected for funding in the idaho pacific coastal salmon recovery program (idaho program) will address factors limiting abundance and productivity of endangered species act (ESA)-listed pacific salmonids in priority spawning and rearing habitat. Limiting factors for each population in each major population group of the snake river steelhead distinct population segment (DPS) and/or spring/summer chinook salmon and sockeye salmon evolutionarily significant units (ESU), are provided in table 2 (located in PDF 2). The idaho program is aligned with the national marine fisheries service (nmfs) 2017 ESA recovery plan for idaho snake river spring/summer chinook salmon (oncorhynchus tshawytscha) and snake river steelhead (oncorhynchus mykiss; NOAA 2017), and the nmfs 2015 recovery plan for snake river sockeye salmon (oncorhynchus nerka; NOAA 2015). Priority two. The idaho program will consider funding projects that will provide effectiveness monitor
