PROJECT PROPOSED FROM COMMUNITY FOUNDATION FOR NORTHEAST MICHIGAN: PREVENTING MARINE DEBRIS TODAY FOR HEALTHY WATERS TOMORROW WILL APPLY PLACE BASED STEWARDSHIP EDUCATION (PBSE) PRACTICES TO ENGAGE TEACHERS, STUDENTS AND THEIR COMMUNITIES IN MEANINGFUL WATERSHED EDUCATIONAL EXPERIENCES (MWEES). IT WILL ENGAGE MORE THAN 800 K-12 STUDENTS AND 10 TEACHERS FROM LOCAL SCHOOLS IN MWEES WITH A TOTAL FUNDING REQUEST OF $79,856 RESULTING IN AN ESTIMATED $100 COST PER STUDENT ENGAGED IN GREAT LAKES AND WATERSHED STEWARDSHIP PROJECTS. THESE SCHOOLS ARE LOCATED ACROSS EIGHT COUNTIES AND EIGHT LAKE HURON WATERSHEDS AND ARE OFTEN CHARACTERIZED BY ECONOMIC CHALLENGES INCLUDING POVERTY, UNEMPLOYMENT, AND LOW EDUCATIONAL ATTAINMENT (AMERICAN COMMUNITY SURVEY 2019). ALL PROJECTS SUPPORTED THROUGH THIS PROPOSAL WILL INCLUDE SUSTAINABILITY PLANS AND, AS APPROPRIATE, CONVERSATIONS WITH ADMINISTRATION WILL ENCOURAGE A SYSTEMIC APPROACH TO PBSE PROJECTS.
