The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) awarded a $200,000 Project Grant under the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Projects of Regional and National Significance program (CFDA 93.243) to Eastern Huron Ambulance Service, a non-profit organization, to provide training for first responders in rural designated counties of Michigan.

The "Michigan Supporting and Improving Rural EMS Needs (MISIREN)" project will train 182 participants in Medical First Responder (MFR) and Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) courses, as well as provide continuing education to 330 EMS personnel. This training will focus on increasing competencies in addressing mental health and substance use disorder issues. The project aims to address workforce shortages and training gaps in rural Michigan EMS agencies by expanding access to critical initial and ongoing EMS education. The project will serve 53 rural counties with a total population of over 1.9 million. Eastern Huron Ambulance Service is partnering with the Michigan Rural EMS Network (MIREMS) and the Northern Michigan Fire Chiefs Association on this initiative.
