The Department of Health and Human Services Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration awarded the University of Notre Dame DU Lac $3,292,909 on September 30, 2025, under the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Projects of Regional and National Significance program (CFDA 93.243) to implement the Northwest Indiana Identification and Management of Pediatric Experiences of Trauma and Underlying Stress (NWI IMPETUS) project. The program implements routine pediatric trauma screening for 9,000 youth per year across northwestern Indiana counties spanning urban and rural areas with disproportionately high rates of poverty, food insecurity, and child maltreatment fatalities. The Care Process Model for Pediatric Traumatic Stress will be deployed in pediatric primary care clinics to enable providers to identify trauma exposure and distinguish it from other behavioral health issues. NWI IMPETUS provides immediate access to brief trauma-informed secondary prevention interventions and group interventions for 200 families per year and trains 50 clinicians annually to deliver longer-term evidence-based interventions including trauma-focused cognitive behavioral therapy and TARGET to 100 youth per year. The project partners with two National Child Traumatic Stress Network Category II Technical Assistance Specialist Centers. Work is performed in Indiana with a period of performance from September 30, 2025, through September 29, 2028. Notre Dame Research, the university's research division operating through its Office of Research, is the recipient.
