The American Psychiatric Association (APA) received a $1,116,224 Project Grant award from the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) under the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Projects of Regional and National Significance (CFDA 93.243) program. The award aims to improve mental health outcomes for racial and ethnic minority populations by increasing the number of culturally informed and linguistically skilled healthcare providers. Over the 5-year project period from September 30, 2024 to September 29, 2029, the APA will engage at least 45 psychiatry residents and fellows annually in monthly didactic courses focused on prevention, treatment, and recovery for communities experiencing mental illness and substance use disorders. The training will be framed around historical and contemporary inequalities faced by marginalized groups, utilizing experiential learning and capstone projects. Additional leadership development opportunities will be provided through participation in APA councils, mentorship programs, and attendance at key events. Through this comprehensive approach, the APA seeks to amplify its impact and prepare a cohort of psychiatrists who are well-versed in culturally relevant treatment approaches and capable of addressing mental healthcare disparities through research and administrative efforts.
