THE PROGRAM WILL REFER INDIVIDUALS WITH THE SIGNS OR SYMPTOMS OF MENTAL ILLNESS TO APPROPRIATE MENTAL HEALTH AGENCIES. PROJECT NAME: "ENDING STIGMA: CRISIS AND PREVENTION EDUCATION INITIATIVE." POPULATIONS TO BE SERVED: ACCORDING TO THE 2018 NATIONAL SURVEY ON DRUG USE AND HEALTH (NSDUH), 28,652 ADULT NEBRASKANS IN THE GEOGRAPHIC CATCHMENT AREA WERE AFFECTED BY A SERIOUS MENTAL ILLNESS (SMI), AND 20,991 YOUTH WERE ALSO AFFECTED BY SERIOUS EMOTIONAL DISTURBANCES (SED). OVERALL, THE PROJECT WILL REACH OUT TO A POTENTIAL 49,643 INDIVIDUALS AFFECTED BY SMI AND/OR SED. STRATEGIES/INTERVENTIONS: THE PROGRAM, IN COLLABORATION WITH PROVIDER AGENCIES WILL BUILD COMMUNITY PARTNERSHIPS WITH LAW ENFORCEMENT, HOSPITALS, FIRE DEPARTMENTS, VETERAN'S AFFAIRS REGIONAL OFFICES IN SELECTED BEHAVIORAL HEALTH REGIONS IN NEBRASKA. PROJECT GOALS AND MEASURABLE OBJECTIVES: GOAL 1: TRAIN INDIVIDUALS (E.G., SCHOOL PERSONNEL, EMERGENCY FIRST RESPONDERS, LAW ENFORCEMENT, VETERANS, ARMED SERVICE MEMBERS AND THEIR FAMILIES) TO RECOGNIZE THE SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS OF MENTAL DISORDERS, PARTICULARLY SMI AND/OR SED. OBJECTIVE 1.1: IN THE FIRST YEAR OF THE GRANT, DEVELOP VERSATILE CURRICULUM, THAT INFORMS SCHOOL PERSONNEL, EMERGENCY FIRST RESPONDERS, LAW ENFORCEMENT, VETERANS, ARMED SERVICES MEMBERS AND THEIR FAMILIES ABOUT THE SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS OF MENTAL DISORDERS. GOAL 2: ESTABLISH LINKAGES WITH SCHOOL- AND/OR COMMUNITY-BASED MENTAL HEALTH AGENCIES TO REFER INDIVIDUALS WITH THE SIGNS OR SYMPTOMS OF MENTAL ILLNESS TO APPROPRIATE SERVICES. OBJECTIVE 2.1: IN EACH YEAR OF THE GRANT, PROVIDE BASIC EDUCATION, RESOURCE INFORMATION, AND REFERRAL SERVICES TO APPROPRIATE SERVICES THROUGH A WEBSITE AND PRINTED MATERIALS TO 100 TEACHERS AND RELEVANT SCHOOL PERSONNEL. GOAL 3: TRAIN EMERGENCY SERVICES PERSONNEL, LAW ENFORCEMENT, FIRE DEPARTMENT PERSONNEL, VETERANS, AND OTHERS TO IDENTIFY PERSONS WITH MENTAL DISORDER USING APPROPRIATE CRISIS DE-ESCALATION TECHNIQUES. OBJECTIVE 3.1: IN EACH YEAR OF THE GRANT, PROVIDE SPECIALIZED TRAININGS TO PERSONNEL. NUMBER OF PEOPLE SERVED BY THE PROJECT: IT IS EXPECTED THAT 500 INDIVIDUALS WILL BE SERVED ANNUALLY, AND A TOTAL OF 2,500 WILL RECEIVE SERVICES THROUGHOUT THE ENTIRETY OF THE PROJECT.
