SPECIAL FOCUS WILL BE GIVEN TO YOUTH AND CRIMINAL JUSTICE-INVOLVED INDIVIDUALS. MENTAL ILLNESS, SUD, AND OUD AMONG THE TARGET POPULATION IS PREVALENT, WITH HIGHER RATES OF ANY MENTAL ILLNESS (AMI) AND SERIOUS MENTAL ILLNESS (SMI) IN THE COUNTY AS COMPARED TO THE STATE AND NATION; THE THIRD HIGHEST DRUG OVERDOSE DEATH RATE OUT OF 82 MS COUNTIES; AND A SUICIDE DEATH RATE THAT IS 58.3% HIGHER THAN THE STATE RATE. THE TARGET POPULATION IS HIGHLY DIVERSE (36.6% AFRICAN AMERICAN) AND STRUGGLES DISPROPORTIONATELY WITH SOCIAL DETERMINANTS OF HEALTH, WITH A POVERTY RATE 19.2% HIGHER THAN THAT OF THE STATE AND 80.6% HIGHER THAN THAT OF THE US. 0.4% OF THE POPULATION IS NATIVE AMERICAN; THIS PROJECT TARGETS ALL RESIDENTS OF COVINGTON COUNTY AND THEREFORE INCLUDES THIS POPULATION BUT DOES NOT SPECIFICALLY TARGET NATIVE AMERICANS.
